There's actually a countdown on the site the Detroit Free Press runs, if they don't get this budget stuff sorted out everything's going to grind to a halt.

54. Will I be able to play the lottery?
Retailers will be instructed to stop Lottery sales during a government shutdown. Players will not be able to buy or redeem tickets. However, drawings will occur as scheduled for tickets that have been purchased prior to the close of business on Sunday, September 30, 2007.

55. Can I buy alcohol?
Liquor sales are regulated by the state and therefore will stop during a government shutdown. Stores will be able to sell the inventory they have on hand, but will be unable to purchase additional inventory.

56. Can I buy cigarettes?
In order to be sold, cigarettes must contain a State of Michigan tobacco tax stamp. Stores will be able to sell the inventory they have on hand. However, if a wholesaler does not have sufficient stamps, cigarettes that do not carry a stamp cannot be sold to retailers.

57. Will the casinos be open?
According to state law, the three Detroit casinos cannot offer gaming, but can offer dining and entertainment. During a shutdown, gaming inspectors would not be working, therefore the Detroit casinos could not offer gaming. Gaming on Indian Reservation land, which is governed by federal law and gaming compact, would continue.

    42. I am funeral home director. I have an indigent decedent. Can I apply for State Emergency Relief for burials?
    The department will not be processing applications for indigent burials during the shutdown.

    :Q Nothing like homeless corpses taking up space in funeral homes.

    Also, who WANTS the state to shut down? I do, personally.

    Wait, what the hell is this? A state shuts down due to a budgeting issue? See, this is why I don't like Federal countries. Much better to have a single central government to control it all.

    The state budget's been messed up for over six months now, I don't know when it really started, but I remember the governor talking about it back when I was delivering pizzas in the first quarter of the year.

    They've had over half a year to get the budget sorted out, but the republicans blocked the democrat's every attempt to raise taxes and refused to set out a legitimate plan that didn't include cutting the funding back for just about everything we desperately need right now.

    I'm all for cutting the bloat out of government, the republicans aren't wrong wanting to do this, but no one can agree on anything. Everything sucks.

    Then a motion of no confidence can be filed in parliament and if it's lost, an election is called, usually voting in a new government who fix the mistakes.
