Freespace 2: Still Awesome
I've been playing through this game again and I'd forgotten how awesome it was, and how much is sucks that the space-sim genre seems to have gone the way of the point-and-click adventure game as of late. Still, even if FS2 was one of the last of its kind, it still went out on a high note and is even better now that the engine's been open-sourced, upgraded graphically, and ported to operating systems that don't suck.
Anyway, the game's free now, so you have no excuse not to play it. Although I would recommend you get your hands on a proper, full-sized joystick first. The game's playable with just a mouse and keyboard, and I've heard of people getting good results playing it with an analog gamepad, but to get the most our of this sort of game you really need a proper flightstick.

It's not a big deal anyway. I've got plenty of other games I need to get through.
Freespace 2 is my favorite game of all time. I love it so much...
There's an open source version of the game that has new features and multiplayer. Its kind of a pain to set up, but I had it working for awhile and it was nice to be able to play online again.
Also, screw joysticks. I beat the game on hard with nothing but my good old fashioned keyboard!
EDIT: Ah, it seems DI has already linked to the open source version. Now with a convenient installer that removes most of the above-mentioned difficulty!
When I start up the game, I get the startup menu that includes 'play', 'setup', 'uninstall', and all that. But when I get click play, I get two messages. The first reads, "Please configure your system in the launcher before running FS2. The Launcher will now be started!"
When I click OK, I get a message that reads, "Freespace2/Fred2 cannot be run from a drive root directory!"
I'm really damn confused. Any ideas?
Don't click on fs2.exe or whatever. Click on launcher.exe instead. you have to set up some stuff before it works.
