Let's face it, I'm a noob with photoshop. What I want to know is, how can you make solid vector-line shapes, that look nice and crisp?

There are zillions of photoshop tutorials for vectors. Here's a basic one I found that seems pretty useful.

I second hlavco's recommendation of
Inkscape
. It's awesome and it's free.

Seriously though, use illustrator. Photoshop has some vector tools, but I find Illustrators much easier and far more useful.

I agree with Geoff, Illustrator is much more useful when it comes to vectors. I have not used Inkscape, so that could very well could be good also.
