Serephel found a job... in China!

Greetings Orange Belt-ians!

As a college student graduating in December, I found myself in dire need of a job. So about two months ago, near the end of September, I began the application process with InSigma Hengtian, an IT services outsourcing firm. I had interned there for about four weeks last summer.

The application process was long. The Chinese are much more relationship oriented, so they do not rush into business situations without knowing it very well. The fact that they have never hired an American before only furthered that process.

I applied for a job in their marketing department. As an American I would be marketing towards English speaking clients in other countries, primarily the US, Canada, and parts of Europe, using my cross-cultural knowledge to bridge the gap between Chinese and Western businesses. The job may even entail traveling to clients in the future.

Throughout the course of the last two months I had had three phone interviews with human resources, the marketing department, and even the vice chair of the company. I had to prove myself further by developing marketing suggestions for their web page, and I had to make a powerpoint presentation about establishing business relationships with Western clients.

After all of those tasks, yesterday morning I finally got an official job offer from the company. I graciously accepted, and I have begun receiving warm welcomes to the company from my various interviewers.

So, now I am preparing to pack up my life and move across the ocean. I'll be moving to beautiful Hangzhou, about 2 hours southwest of Shanghai, in Zhejiang province.

I have not decided on an exact date yet, but I will be moving there around mid to late January. I'll be buying a ticket in the next few weeks.

When I was there over the summer, the Orange Belt was still under the radar of the Great Firewall. But, I suppose I'll wait and see...

Well, I hear proxy servers do fairly well to circumvent the Chinese censorship machine, perhaps you could look into that.

Congrats on the job though, sir.

Wow, very cool! Good luck with your new life.

You might not have access to the Orange Belt?!

You clearly must turn down this offer!

If for some insane reason you don't, congratulations! It sounds exciting!

Well, with me around, I can understand why we're a threat to the Chinese government.

I think it was that thread on Tiananmen Square that did it. So if we want him to stay active while in China we can't mention Tiananmen Square, The Tiananmen Square Massacre of 1989 or any other Tiananmen Square related things.

    Tiananmen Square.

Well, at least we're not talking about that time that the guy stood in front of a tank, and then got killed.

China would be pissed about that.

Just remember, if I post anywhere on the forums "Long live the glorious Chinese communist government," it'll be code for "I am about to be thrown in a Chinese prison somewhere, and I'll need someone to come rescue me."

But what if you have a change of heart, and actually do learn to embrace Communist China? Then we'll all be on a rescue mission that is very unnecissary.

And I'll be ON MY WAY.

I'll leave it to you John to bitch slap the communism out of me.
  • edited November 2007
How else do you remove communism?

I think it's more effective if a pimp does the slapping, they represent capitalism at its finest!

    John, get on that.

Dude, John's been a pimp since birth.

    Self indulgent necro thread revival!

Due to government regulation complications, my flight got rescheduled from Jan 22nd to Feb. 3rd, this Sunday. So now I'm packing and stuff. I'm of course bringing the absolute essentials, like clothes, and my computer so I can readily access Orange Belt.

I'm wondering if there are many other things I should pack. I'm going to bring a gigantic bottle of aspirin and another gigantic bottle or two of Tums for when I go through the painful process of adjusting to Chinese bacteria. And, they'll be handy in case I accidentally drink the water.

I've also got some gifts packed, and my Wii so I can entertain guests at my humble apartment.

So I propose the question to the Belt: What do you all think I should also bring? I can check two 50 pound bags.

Hmm, I'll ask my mom if she can think of anything, she was in China last year for about a month for work. I'm sure there's some stuff she missed while she was there that she could have packed.

50 pounds of American grown ground beef.

Nintendo DS and a good book. I recommend The Principalities and Powers of Europe by Adrian Hilton.

Man, I feel like suck that I'm reading this thread after he's already left.

Uh, bon voyage, Serephel, if you manage to read this site ever again.

I think he's still here. He said he was leaving on Sunday.
  • edited January 2008
Yeah Stef, it's almost like you want him to go.
  • edited January 2008
Well I know I sure do. He's been hanging around here long enough.

    - If I could bring beef, I would definitely do so. Maybe get a cooler and pack it full of steaks...
    - I'm bringing some business textbooks I saved, so that's kind of like capitalism.
    - DS is coming, and I'm bringing some R.A. Salvatore books to read.
    - It does sound like Stef wants me to go. Why do you hate me?

I don't know what you should take, but what you should bring back is some of that delicious opium.
