Serephel found a job... in China!
Greetings Orange Belt-ians!
As a college student graduating in December, I found myself in dire need of a job. So about two months ago, near the end of September, I began the application process with InSigma Hengtian, an IT services outsourcing firm. I had interned there for about four weeks last summer.
The application process was long. The Chinese are much more relationship oriented, so they do not rush into business situations without knowing it very well. The fact that they have never hired an American before only furthered that process.
I applied for a job in their marketing department. As an American I would be marketing towards English speaking clients in other countries, primarily the US, Canada, and parts of Europe, using my cross-cultural knowledge to bridge the gap between Chinese and Western businesses. The job may even entail traveling to clients in the future.
Throughout the course of the last two months I had had three phone interviews with human resources, the marketing department, and even the vice chair of the company. I had to prove myself further by developing marketing suggestions for their web page, and I had to make a powerpoint presentation about establishing business relationships with Western clients.
After all of those tasks, yesterday morning I finally got an official job offer from the company. I graciously accepted, and I have begun receiving warm welcomes to the company from my various interviewers.
So, now I am preparing to pack up my life and move across the ocean. I'll be moving to beautiful Hangzhou, about 2 hours southwest of Shanghai, in Zhejiang province.
I have not decided on an exact date yet, but I will be moving there around mid to late January. I'll be buying a ticket in the next few weeks.
When I was there over the summer, the Orange Belt was still under the radar of the Great Firewall. But, I suppose I'll wait and see...

Congrats on the job though, sir.
You clearly must turn down this offer!
If for some insane reason you don't, congratulations! It sounds exciting!
Congratulations!
Tiananmen Square.
China would be pissed about that.
I think it's more effective if a pimp does the slapping, they represent capitalism at its finest!
John, get on that.
Fight the power!
Due to government regulation complications, my flight got rescheduled from Jan 22nd to Feb. 3rd, this Sunday. So now I'm packing and stuff. I'm of course bringing the absolute essentials, like clothes, and my computer so I can readily access Orange Belt.
I'm wondering if there are many other things I should pack. I'm going to bring a gigantic bottle of aspirin and another gigantic bottle or two of Tums for when I go through the painful process of adjusting to Chinese bacteria. And, they'll be handy in case I accidentally drink the water.
I've also got some gifts packed, and my Wii so I can entertain guests at my humble apartment.
So I propose the question to the Belt: What do you all think I should also bring? I can check two 50 pound bags.
Uh, bon voyage, Serephel, if you manage to read this site ever again.
- I'm bringing some business textbooks I saved, so that's kind of like capitalism.
- DS is coming, and I'm bringing some R.A. Salvatore books to read.
- It does sound like Stef wants me to go. Why do you hate me?
