Well... I think that the theory behind that piece is very interesting. But maybe he went a little too far trying to pass it off as a song. Some things are better left ideas.
now that I think of it, I believe john Cage said that he actually wrote out a whole song of rests (of different note values), and whenever he 'performs' the song he sits with an actual score of music on the piano, sits with a stop watch, starts the stop watch and waits til the first movement finishes, turning the page every so often. When the first movement is over (I think after a certain amount of second), he stops the stop watch, and then starts it again for the second movement.
What a genious... he makes money by performing stuff like this.
... Yes, that is indeed the song I alluded to and linked to that started us on this whole John Cage tangent in the first place. It's called 4'33".
The real performance isn't him sitting a the piano turning pages, it's all the little noises that come from the audience. Guys coughing, people shuffling around nervously, a couple chatting quietly, stuff like that.

I know you were talking about John cage, I was assuming people just thought he sat at a piano with no music for a certain amount of time whenever he played 4'33". I was saying I'm pretty sure he actually wrote out rests on a sheet of paper.

Yes, he did. I was responding to a picture of sheet music with rests written out.

No, but those are just whole rests. John Cage wrote out 16th rests and 8th rests... a melody of rests, really. Why so defensive about it anyway? Even if I had just misread it (which I assure you, I didn't!), it's not that big of a deal. It's all good! I promise I'm not just trying to get the last word in, I'm honestly trying to tell you that I did know that you were talking about 4'33", I understood the reference, and I was merely trying to add to the conversation by saying that I think he wrote out a song with various notes of rests (of different durations) instead of just having a blank score of whole rests. I apologize for not using specific definations of the rests I was talking about when i commented the first time.

My music teacher in high school talked about it every year. I heard about it four times.
