The Super Smash Bros. Brawl Tournament Thread

edited May 2008 in Games
I'd like to take control on this matter, as I've shown my ability to organize contests before! Hehe!

Here's what I'm thinking:

Who: Anyone who's an Orange Belt member
What: Smash Bros Brawl 1 on 1 tournaments
Where: Organized in this thread!
Why: We've all been waiting to pummel each other in this game!
When: I'm thinking every week, either Friday or Saturday
How: Sign up here every week from the day after the last tournament until about 2-3 Days before

Tell me what you think!

Here's where the info will go:

NEXT TOURNAMENT: 4/19/08
NEXT TOURNAMENT STILL OPEN TO CONTENDERS: 4/19/08
WINNERS:

But lately I actually do shit on Friday and Saturday!

You spelled contenders wrong, by the way.

    Pedantry still lives ^_^

I'll do it, but there will be a delay. I need to import it and all that jazz.

EDIT: Woo, importing it with shipping and the cost of a wii Freeloader is only £40

I'm in. An organized tournament is a great idea. I'll be playing Sonic, Kirby, and Toon Link 90% of the time. Kirby can copy, Sonic is Sonic, and Toon Link has a costume from the original Zelda in Brawl.

In. But I'll probably not be in the first few, my pre-order isn't supposed to get here until the 19th, and I want to try out the new characters first.
  • edited March 2008
I'll be one of the last. I haven't pre-ordered Brawl. And I have buy a wireless router. So even if I get Brawl I still have to get connected to the Internets. I used to have one but it broke after a throwing session. Anger. Grr.
  • edited March 2008
Not to worry. I don't have it preordered either. Not that I'd manage to get more than 10 minutes a week to play it, but that's a problem for after I manage to get the game.

The first one will be 3/22/08, which is 2 saturdays from this saturday! Be there!

    Sign up, too!
  • edited March 2008
    I hereby enter your tournament!

What will the rules be? Will there be Items? Do smash balls qualify as items? Do you have to stick with one character the whole time? Final Destination only? These are important details!
  • edited March 2008
The rules are that there are no rules.
  • edited March 2008
Except for all the rules. Sign me up, but I would also like to know the battle conditions. Though I generally prefer stock battles, timed battles may be necessary to expedite round length.

    Suggestions:
    -3 minute melee
    -default items
    -random levels
    -no character limitations

This would seem to strike a good balance. Free choice of characters lets us play to our potential strengths, and random items and levels act as equalizers.

For the record, though, if Melee's Icicle Mountain were in the game, I would humbly request that it be taken out of the randomizer. Hopefully Brawl will not have pain in the ass levels like that one was.
  • edited March 2008
Yeah, no scrolling levels. Levels like the F-Zero one from Melee are fine tho.

Any level were you have to actively move to stay in the the screen is just freaking annoying.
  • edited March 2008
While technically a scrolling level, Mushroomy Kingdom scrolls at a nice easy pace, I think that one would be okay.

I like Mario's rules, but I think stock would still probably be okay. 3-stock rounds don't seem to last much more than 5-6 minutes from videos I've seen.

But that's my favorite level! Aren't you supposed to be the best? Do you doubt your abilities on such a level?

I do not. However, I don't enjoy playing in a level where survival often boils down to dumb luck. I prefer the player's skills to be the ultimate deciding factor, and there's no skill involved in someone happening to choose a character that can't jump fast enough to outrun a suddenly rapidly-scrolling level, or get stuck under one of the rocks you can't pass through. All other things being equal, Bowser pretty much can't play Icicle Mountain effectively, which makes the level broken in my opinion.

When's the cut off date for entering?
  • edited March 2008
Meh, I'm in. The Ice Climbers have served me well in the past, and they shall serve you too.
  • edited March 2008
    3 Stock match
    Default items
    All characters
    Random stage

    Bam!

The cutoff is 3/15/08, a week before.

Who you will fight is in order of posts, top to bottom!

Therefore, you can stratagize your timing to pick your opponents!

Unfortunate for you then that you're playing me first.
  • edited March 2008
Matt and me? Oh hell yes.
  • edited March 2008
Hopefully mario will recover from the mental anguish of getting destroyed by me in a somewhat short amount of time so we can continue to work on "Matt & Mario"

Speaking of Brawl tournaments (forgot to mention this sooner), GameStops across the country are holding regional qualifier matches tonight. Here's the information page. I certainly don't consider myself to have any guarantee of performing well, but how awesome would it be if two or more Orange Belt folks got to duke it out in person in the final round? Just sayin' is all. I hope everyone that is able takes the opportunity to sign up. I talked to my local GameStop employee, and he says they'll be one-on-one, one minute battles, default characters and item settings, fixed level for everybody, remote/nunchuk controls (so that all of us that practiced on Melee with GameCube controllers won't have an immediate advantage).

    Good luck to you all!

Best Buys seem to have Brawl demos up, I managed to get some good practice with the wiimote + nunchuck setup. It actually feels really good once you get used to it. I feel pretty confident for this tournament now!
  • edited March 2008
I can't connect my Wii online anymore :(
  • edited March 2008
    That is unacceptable.
  • edited March 2008
Hey bitches, guess what I'm holding in my hands right now!

    I'll tourney it up, yeah.

Gamestop by me had Wavebirds plugged in, but hell if I was going to hang around there, there were some awfully sterotypical nerds, some twitchy guys, and this one frat-boy looking dude who was way too excited.

I got to the finals at my local gamestop using Olimar. I lost in sudden death to a Pikachu's thunder. It was great though, because out of all the Ikes and Foxes and Kirby's, no one thought the only Olimar was going to go anywhere. Everyone was rooting for me in the end, and it was a darn close match. I'm just happy I got as far as I did, I didn't really want that trophy anyway.
  • edited March 2008
My roommate actually won the tournament with Marth. He won one of the ugliest trophies I've ever seen, he almost gave it away.

From the little bit that I was able to play today, I'm real excited about pokemon trainer, he's just plain fun to play as. And I'm already deeply in love with the shadow moses and pikmin stage.

Yeah, Pokemon Trainer is pretty awesome, but I'm not sure if I like him or Ike more. I'm entering this, so I'll have to post my Wii code tomorrow, unless I did at some point and forgot.

    LIES!!!

JK, I sure it was all good fun, but Pikachu is one annoying character, but that is why I like to play as him :)
