Show off your Spore creatures!

edited September 2008 in Games
That's right kids, the Spore creature creator has been released to the general public! There's a free version with about 25% of the parts, and a full version for $9.99. I personally am going to wait for the actual game to come out to get all the parts, but the free versions still fun to play around with.

http://www.spore.com/trial

It works for both PC and Mac, so get to it!

My creatures so far:

If you want to see them in-game, you can save the .PNG's and put them into your creatures folder in the Spore directory. All the code needed to generate your creature is somehow embedded in the images.

I got to play with a demo version at MacWorld. Seems a little weird to charge money for this software; does this $10 go toward the eventual cost of the game? Spore looks cool, but I'm not quite obsessive enough to give them hard-earned cash for their little tech demo. ^__^

Maybe I'll try out the freebie version later tonight, if I can get my Internet connection up and running. Like what you've made so far! Geoff's horrific creation at MacWorld, however, was a sight to behold. Maybe he'll post his cameraphone pics.

I don't think it does, which is why I'm not buying it. Its no fun spoiling all the parts before I get the game anyway.

Even with the limited amount of parts though, the amount of diversity you can create is amazing.

Yes, it is awesome. I had the trial two days ago (hee hee).

    I bought the full version.

Wow, nice job on the Bulborb, Deku! I was looking at the picture thinking, "Pikmin anyone?" and then I looked at the name.

    Looks like Hammy wins.

Do you have to make a land creature? I'd like to make some crazy ocean ruling whale-thing.

There aren't aquatic creatures yet, it's speculated that EA made them hold off on it so it could be added in as an expansion later. Flying creatures too.

Edit: Well, actually, if it doesn't have legs it'll float, but the animation on this can be good or bad depending on how you shape the body, so you can totally make fish. The only caveat is the spore editor can't really make flat bodies, so your fish is gonna be kinda fat.

Rrr, I've tried to install it thrice but to no avail. Here's the problem, when I install it I start it up, it goes to the beginning "no rights reserved" page and then goes to the EA logo as it should, but only a second into the EA logo screen the program shuts itself down, this happens every time. I originally thought, "Hey, I'm an avid game downloader (free MMO's and the such) maybe I don't have room and it didn't install all the way like what happened when I was trying to install SimCity 4!" So I went into remove programs, removed some games I don't play and LimeWire as well as the Lego Digital Designer thing, and then removed the Spore trial. After that I reinstalled it, no luck. So I thought that maybe the setup didn't install correctly, I re-downloaded it. Nothin'. I don't know whats going on and I really do want to try it. You Orangebeltians know whats going on?

You might have better luck on EA's support pages or discussion boards, it's possible other people have experienced similar issues. Unfortunately, none of us are Spore Creature Creator experts (expect Jeff, who totally did win with that Sorcerer's Apprentice broomstick). No Internet at my house until at least Saturday, so I'll just have to keep watching you guys from afar.

I've decided to try installing it with Internet Explorer, just for kicks.

    Edit: Rawrg, didn't work.

Don't ask me, I downloaded it from Direct2Drive. My download was just the contents of the CD in a zip archive.

Meh, I didn't think the graphics and stuff were that good, but apparantly my lappy has below the minimum system requirements, which means I either need a serious upgrade, or a new computer to play it when the actual game comes out.

Trial version, here. I tried making a Malboro from Final Fantasy, didn't work out so well. When I succeed I will share it.

NoLonger, try updating your video card drivers. A lot of people's problems with Spore have been solved by doing that.

Meh I could, but when I looked up the system requirements I learned my processor is 0.4 gigahertz short of the 2.0 they want. I dont even know why I thought I could play it. Anyways, I'm looking around for a decent computer that's cheap, could I get some advice on this? Oh, and don't even think of suggesting a desktop, I sorta need/want a portable device for gaming with my buddies.

Well laptops are inherently bad at gaming, unless you want to spend an arm and a leg. I don't know your price range or anything. But the Lenovo Thinkpads are pretty nice.
  • edited June 2008
Thanks Deku, my price range is around 700-800 dollars so the 14 inch one is absolutely perfect.

Edit: After some searching I ended up opting for a Gateway M-6850 FX, I believe it was worth it.

John, your creature has given me nightmares. Awesome.
  • edited June 2008
He is my first one, and I love him.

Also, my computer is saddled with a Pentium M 1.7GHz processor: by no means the most powerful. I also saw Spore's "minimum requirements", and was afraid I'd be unable to make dolphins with ridiculously large horns, but ultimately these fears lead naught to fruition.

Who else has noticed that when you get the galaxy on the opening page to spin fast enough (using the left click) a head pops out?
