While I love this news, I'd enjoy some new games.

    Keep dreamin'.

    Blargh, overrated!

I haven't played much of this game series, but I imagine a sequel would have been cooler news than a remake. Or else a port of Radical Dreamers.

Apparently the game's harder to find than EarthBound. I haven't played it, but I imagine people are plenty glad.

While I do love Chrono Trigger a WHOLE lot, I'm not as excited for this port. I really don't like what they've done with the way the environments and characters look on other DS Final Fantasy ports... they're too...cutesy, and I'm worried they'll do the same thing with this version. At least I hope they tone down the colors a bit, jeez.

Now this, on the other hand, would have been TOTALLY awesome. If only Square didn't squash it.

So what Square are doing is using the DS as a platform to cash in on the childhood memories of people in their twenties?
  • edited July 2008
    Hell yeah they are.

Honestly, I don't know if I would enjoy some of these older titles if I had never played them as a child. One of my friends was introduced to Chrono Trigger in college, and she thought it was okay, but nothing special.

That combined with Jakey's comment makes me wonder... Chrono Trigger and Earthbound and Final Fantasy III seem AMAZING to me... but how much of that is objective?

I love Earthbound, never played FFIII. For an epic collaboration of early 90s Square and Enix, Chrono Trigger was a disappointment. Crono, Marle, and Lucca are three of the dumbest fucking heroes I have ever encountered in my years of video game nerdery. This could be symbolic of the potential disorentation of humankind in the face of the vastness of time, but characters I can't stand make it hard for me to enjoy the game. Everything that makes this game enjoyable (with the exception of a few of the songs and scenes) is compressed into the Kingdom of Zeal; kind of makes it poetically just that said state gets blown to pieces not long after the player arrives there.

Yo, I was playing CT this morning and I SWEAR TO GOD I was like 'they should port this to the DS' AND LO AND BEHOLD! :] I'm pumped!

Uhh... well, I'm trying to figure out what you're talking about, Jakey... I mean, sure, they're dumb, but aren't most video game heroes pretty dumb sometimes? To what are you referring?

And also, I disagree, I think there's a lot of really enjoyable moments. The future is a pain in the ass to navigate, and I think that's great... the music, environments, everything about the future just screams bleak and empty. The End of Time was done well, and I liked the differences between 600 AD and 1000 AD. Obviously Zeal is freakin amazing. The only time I really didn't like was Prehistoric... but that's not a huge segment of the game.

Chrono Trigger is, without question, my favorite game, ever. I have played through it more times than any other game. I still love when you do a new game plus and just go kill Lavos with Crono. it just makes for an awsome story line. Dude wakes up, goes to teh fair, finds a portal and meets a giant monster with a shell, without a word, pulls out his sword and proceeds to kick ass.

I also am not that excited for this.

Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games, because I in my younger days used to be a time travel nut, and I loved reading both fiction and theoretical books about it. Chrono Trigger with its multiple endings was my wet dream.

But, I'm tired of remakes and ports. Several years back, there was a team of people on the internet that was making an entirely 3D remake of Chrono Trigger. It was going to be free, they weren't making any money off of it. They were doing it just because they loved the game, and they thought it would be awesome in 3D.

Square Enix lawyers threatened to sue if they didn't halt immediately.

This is just how business works. Games are increasingly more and more expensive to produce. Thus, the risks are greater if a game does not sell well. Shareholders are pissed, multiple failed games cause managers and CEOs to get kicked out in lieu of new management, etc. So, many companies take the safe route and make sequels and ports.

I was forgiving of Final Fantasy sequels at first, because they were barely considered sequels. The title, chocobos, moogles, a couple summons, and Cid were the only things tying each game together, but they had no real connection between games. Those notwithstanding, each game was basically a new game.

But now Square-Enix no longer has that drive or creativity. They beat Final Fantasy VII into oblivion with its subpar sequels, prequels, and spinoffs. They are creating sequels to individual games that have already established themselves, because they either lack the creative talent to do so, or they're so goddamn beholden to shareholders that they don't have the balls to stand up and do something original.

So, a Chrono Trigger port to the DS to me seems no different than when Disney used to dig up really old successful movies and make shitty direct-to-vhs/dvd sequels.

Chrono Trigger was a great game for me, and it is the first game to really get me into RPGs, so I am biased that way anyway. I don't want to see Square drag it through the mud and abuse our loyalty like it has Final Fantasy I and VII.

Well, perhaps I'm being too harsh on it. The last time I played it was a good 10 years ago now. But even at 13 I thought that most of the conflict that forwarded the plot could have been easily avoided if the main characters just had some common sense. And I have very little patience for the whole time travel conceit I guess. And I always seem to be the only person who doesn't love Chrono Trigger, so my dislike of it has probably moved into irrationality at this point after having to argue with dorks about it for so long. Maybe I'll obtain a copy by questionable means and give it another look.

I assume you're referring to the use of misunderstandings, like the whole Crono trial or when Marle is mistaken for Leene. When I was younger, that sort of thing always pissed me off. It's like, why not just tell the truth. But as you get older, you realize that trying to reason with someone who has already made up their mind is pointless and may only exacerbate the situation. They don't have that sort fo time, they need to take action to save the world. So, it's not really a lack of common sense so much as a means of expedience.

I hope they don't remake the graphics, myself.

But how else are they going to give characters extra belts? Extra belts, man!

dude, don't you forget about the zippers
