OB GUYS HELP ME (with shaving tips)

edited August 2008 in General
Ok, this is kinda embarrasing but I've noticed I really don't know how to shave. It seems that the only way I can get a clean, close shave is when I have a brand new razor; otherwise, it's just all a mess and I always end up looking like if I had a 5 o'clock shadow when that's not my intention!
I was thinking about all of this when I realized "Hey, the OB is famous for it's bearded men! Surely they can advice me on how to get a clean shave!" So, please share any tips you might have. Please?

I'm a strong proponent of electric razors for providing clean shaves. It's a good investment.

Cut throat Razors. Expensive but long lasting.

How do you shave, to begin with? Do you just drag the razor downward? I find taking a pass upward with it as well makes the shave closer.

What kind of razor are you using?

I find it's helpful to go against the grain to get a close shave. By going in downward motions with the grain, you can't get rid of that 5 o'clock shadow look.

Although, I find that if I shave against the grain every day, it starts to irritate my skin, and I get ingrown hairs. I shave every two to four days now and it works well for me. I look like a hobo during those days, but whatevs.

Electric razors are nice, and they do get a great shave around the chin and lips areas, but I find that they irritate the skin on my neck.

Mario, do you have any recommendations for electric shavers? I've been intending to buy one for a while, but I don't know what's good and what's not.

I use an electric razor for convenience, but it certainly doesn't provide as clean a shave as a regular blade, especially along the lower chin/neck (although I find moving the shaver in a circular pattern helps there.)

I use a Remington Titanium R50 'cause it was cheap but it does the job reasonably well.

Although I use the electric for regular daily shaving, when I really need to look my best I usually go over my face with the electric and then use a bladed razor and cream. Having your facial hair already cut relatively short makes the blade/cream shave much easier.

I also do all this before I shower, so that I don't have to waste precious minutes leaning over the sink rinsing my face off.

I use a standard Gillete Mach 3. I usually just shave downwards, and go against the grain in my neck and sometimes around the lips area. The problem is that I have a bit of acne (not a big problem, just a bit) so it's really hard to shave around my chin and lips sometimes.

Mario, what electric razor do you suggest? Or what should I look for in one, and how much do you think I should spend?

I've been using the same Norelco razor for about a decade and it's served me really well. Only in recent weeks have I felt that the blades might need replacement, which seems like a pretty good run to me. If you're worried about skin irritation, they appear to have a few models that dispense lotion.

    Nair.

Going against the grain opens up pores and allows for acne far easier than going with the grain. I never ever ever go against the grain and haven't had so much as a pimple in years.

    My advice:
    Go with the grain
Get cheap razors you don't mind replacing every week
Don't be afraid to use a little force. Don't go nuts but don't be a lady about it either (though honestly they could probably tell you quite a bit about shaving)
Shaving cream is your friend, use it in large numbers and if you're really sensitive the gel stuff is stupendous.

    Happy shaving!

Well by going against the grain, you can cut up your face enough to intimidate your facial hair into never growing back!

    Here's my advice on shaving.

    Don't do it.

There aren't enough men with beards in the world.

B-but then people will confuse me with my twin.. the evil one.

Ah, but then you can commit your acts of devilry with an air-tight alibi.

seconded. I'm on my third electric razor - just cause of theft though. don't know why but people keep stealin' the buggers from me. I also have a Norelco, and have been happy with it.

There you have it. Get a Norelco. I might be getting one myself.

Geoko, Mario, any recommendations on types of Norelco razors? Cheap ones work, or would you recommend investing a little extra money into an expensive one?

Having only owned this one (the 4816XL), I don't have much input on which model to pick up. Like anything, buy within your budget (don't skimp on the cheap stuff) and check out Amazon reviews. A quick glance reveals that most of the Norelco razors there get four stars or better, and the very bestselling models are under $100.

Since I'm in the Air Force, I've been trained to use aircraft propellers to shave. I cut myself once. Once.

But can you do it in mid-air?
  • edited August 2008
I'm sure he can, I'd bet he trims his pubes the same way, that googly bastid.

I'll look around for one then, it's settled. The thing is that I live in south America, so it could be a bit tricky finding one specific brand. But maybe it's common, I really have no idea.

EDIT: I just noticed it's by Philips. I'm sure I'll have no problem finding it then. I thought Norelco was some more obscure brand.

All this talk of shaving reminds me that I haven't in like 6 months. I've got this mexican looking stache thing going on and that half scraggly beard. I wish I could grow a goatee :<.

Man, screw that, I want a jakey beard. Last I saw that thing looked like it could house a family of voles!
  • edited August 2008
Jakey's beard is a testament to beards everywhere. A shining beacon of beards in a time of close shaves, and expensive razors.

Jon's beard, however, is festier than ever, and probably gave birth to the a new breed of Beard Voles.

Ah, how I wish I could grow a Jakey beard...

Alas! I can grow no more than a goatee
  • edited August 2008
I can grow a goatee that doesn't look entirely bad, but full beards are still years out of my league.

Jakeybeards are quite awe inspiring, and they remind you that he when walks, he drags a nice, big pair on the ground under him.

I'm a bit late to this, but I'll put in my input anyway..

I find that electric razors don't get rid of enough to make your skin feel smooth. I use a Quattro (because I was given one for free, not because I think that the extra blade will somehow work better). I always go against the grain, unless I haven't shaved in a few days, then I start with the grain to get it shorter, then go against the grain to get it smooth.

And I can't stand shaving at a sink, it hurts way too much. I just shave in the shower with soap. Most people look at me funny when I say that, but that's the most painless, smooth shave I can get, and I'm very happy with the results. But I cannot grow a beard, or any facial hair. My mustache still has a big gap right in the middle, and my beard area grows in kinda patchy. So I'll stick with clean-shaven, thank you.

Shaving legs is waaaay easier than shaving beards. Shaving armpits is kinda hard, but I still think beards would be harder to shave. Looks painful. Armpits are at least only a very small part to shave.

Oh man, what did I do wrong?

Request video of Lauren shaving her armpits, please.

    I'm serious.
