I haven't started yet. So I'm supposed to write a >50k word novel? I've got a few ideas! Ach I'm behind already!

Sooner you start, the better. Just write for an hour a day, you'll catch up soon.

I'm up to about 1,000. The plane ride helped. :D I'll come back to this thread for motivation. Thanks guys!

Awesome! Yes, keep writing. I am trying to write and bank a few extra days' worth of writing, since I have a couple busy times later this month. Since I have a 5 day Hong Kong business trip and my parents visiting for 10 days, I essentially have about half a month where I may not have any time to write. But I'm sticking with it. So you can easily still make it, we're only a few days in.

I'm still definitely out for this year's festivities, but I plan on doing this next year for sure. I would very much like to write a modern prose translation/adaptation of Grettis Saga, a medieval Icelandic saga concerning the exploits of the outlaw Grettir. It's pretty sweet compared with other sagas because of both it's main character (an outlaw cursed to live on the fringes of society in solitude) and the extreme amount of supernatural stuff that happens (most awesomely, he fights a draugr, the Norse equivalent of a zombie). And the medieval style of extremely limited internal thought processes leaves a lot of gaps I can hopefully fill in in very interesting ways. I was also thinking of retaining ALL of the dialogue and just characterizing it in fun ways with gestures, actions, and thoughts.

So yeah. If I had more time I would do that this year, but since I have to write 3 papers in the next 6 weeks, I figure I'll wait til next time.

Grr I already fell behind, I'm at 12,750 words when I should be at 15,000. This is made worse by a friend of mine who went crazy over the weekend and is currently sitting at 27,000. I have my business trip this week too, and that'll hurt my writing time a lot.

Ryan, I'm still behind you. WRITE ON!
  • edited November 2009
I'm at 3,000 after I did 1,000 last night between 10 and 2 am. I'm... definitely behind, but I'll still keep chug chugging along.

I've stagnated at 18,800 for a day - on a weekend - argh! I'm supposed to be at 23300 right now. At least my story has a direction of some sort.

I am only at 14k! I spent my nights in Hong Kong last week going out and getting really really really drunk instead of writing!
  • edited November 2009
But getting really really really drunk gives you great ideas for writing! Too bad you don't remember them the next day, though.

I'm still at 4500. Maybe I should...maybe I should write tonight. Does anybody else find that they write dialogue faster than description or action?
  • edited November 2009
I do. I can blow through a long dialogue in a matter of minutes, but when I have some action packed sequence it seems to take absolutely forever to write.
  • edited November 2009
I blow through dialogue too, except it doesn't add up to as many words as normal paragrpahs would in the end. I even write my exposition as dialogue, just because it flows easier to type. If I ever edit, I'll have to condense it down and remove it from dialogue.

Besides, it's easier to read dialogue than Lord of the Rings.

    Shweet! Congrats

Ohh I failed. I blame it on the fact that I spent over two weeks traveling for work or with my parents. But I am over 25k words, so I've got enough momentum to finish it.

    Sigh. Maybe next year.

Ryan, 25,000+ words on a novel is still awesome. Have you ever written a piece of fiction that large before?

    Next year for sure!
  • edited December 2009
    Nicely done!
  • edited December 2009
Still at 4,000 words. :D Maybe next time.
  • edited October 2010
It's almost that time again. Who's doing it this year?
  • edited October 2010
    ME.
  • edited October 2010
I have considered trying to write stuff, but have no real ambition to actually start anything. I'm fairly certain anything I tried to write would be terrible.
  • edited October 2010
That's the point of the contest though, to share your terrible writing with the world as they share their terrible writing with you.

I don't think I'll participate either. I've been busy with other stuff.
  • edited October 2010
Actually, your wrong Az. The point isn't to share it with anyone. The point is to write 50,000 words and feel a sense of accomplishment. You can share it with the world, or you can magnetize your hard drive so the world is never exposed to the abomination you wrote. Totally your choice.
  • edited October 2010
Well yeah, but it's a secondary point.
  • edited October 2010
Ugh. Every year I promise myself that I'll work on this and then it totally slips my mind. Maybe I won't commit this year and if I find the time, well hey I'll do what I can.

It's November! Who's in? Who has started?

I went to bed instead of starting last night, bucking my Hallowe'en tradition. Much work ahead of me tonight. Now to find an idea, some inspiration

I'm in! 2200 words so far.
