THEN THEY SHOULD DO THEIR JOB. THEY SHOULD CONSIDER THEMSELVES LUCKY. IN MOST PROFESSIONS YOU GET FIRED FOR SLACKING OFF, THEY JUST TAKE A MINOR PAY CUT.

I ALSO DON'T LIKE WHEN I AM FACED WITH "TIP?" AND I WAS JUGGLED BETWEEN THREE DIFFERENT WAITERS. DO I WRITE ON THE BILL WHICH ONE WAS CUTEST? I DON'T REMEMBER !!!

IN MOST RESTAURANT-TYPE ESTABLISHMENTS, THE TIPS ARE GATHERED TOGETHER AT THE END OF THE NIGHT AND DISTRIBUTED EVENLY, OR WEIGHTED AT SET LEVELS BETWEEN WAITERS, CHEFS, BUSBOYS AND THE LIKE. YET ANOTHER REASON TO TIP 15% MINIMUM; IF YOUR WAITER TREATS YOU LIKE SHIT, THE COOK DOESN'T DESERVE TO BE SHAFTED. SAME GOES IF YOUR FOOD WASN'T UP TO EXPECTATION BUT THE WAITER WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY.

I SAY THAT'S JUST YET ANOTHER REASON WHY TIPS SHOULD BE FACTORED INTO THE PRICES. IF IT'S NOT EVEN GOING TO THE PERSON THAT WAS SERVING YOU THEN WHAT'S THE POINT?

HEY, IF TIPS WERE FACTORED INTO THE PRICE (LIKE SALES TAX IS IN SPAIN), I'D BE PERFECTLY HAPPY. THERE'D BE NO PRESSURE TO TIP, AND NO PESKY ON-THE-SPOT CALCULATIONS. I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT PEOPLE WERE ARGUING TIPS VERSUS NO TIPS, NOT TIPS VERSUS INCLUDED GRATUITY.

I worked at a country club as a busboy once, and I didn't get any tips. And yet the waiters made more money per hour than I did. It sucked ass.

A GOOD RULE WHEN TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE TIP IS JUST TO DOUBLE THE TAX. IN CALIFORNIA, AT LEAST. I DON'T REALLY KNOW THE TAX RATES IN OTHER STATES.
  • edited November 2008
YEAH, THAT'S A PRETTY HANDY RULE. BUT IT MIGHT STILL BE A BIT UNDER 15%, SINCE YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO TIP BASED ON THE GROSS, NOT THE NET.

    EEW, GROSS

    It's easy.

    $33 = 3.30 + 3.30/2 = 3.30 + 1.65 = 4.95 or $5 tip

Was that so hard? The number /10, then half of that number, and add.

... I'd just rather that everyone was paid a living wage.

I didn't even need to tip for the hour long shampoo/head massage/body massage/hair cut that I paid $7 dollars for last Friday. Although the service was freaking amazing. If it were socially acceptable, I would have tipped, because I thought they did an awesome job. But that's not the social norm here.
