Hollywood Unoriginality Ratio: Quantum of Solace

Geoff, Kyle and I walked down to Century 12 Downtown in San Mateo last night to take a gander at the latest James Bond flick...

    Quantum of Solace sucked. Yes.

Fine, but what did you think of the trailers?!?
  • edited November 2008
The trailer for Seven Pounds seems nifty :D

Will Smith is clearly compensating for doing something bad by making the lives of seven people better.

Hmm. I think I can see that in there.

Quantum of Solace. That movie has the most frantic editing I've seen since Transporter. While the title cards that flashed over each location looked great and very retro, the action sequences were edited terribly. The opening car chase was impossible to follow, as well as when he and a bad guy are dangling from ropes trying to shoot one another. How amazing would that rope scene have been if we had a few more establishing shots that held long enough to see the actors flailing toward and away from one another, as if it were an old kung fu flick?

Plus, the Jack White and Alicia Keyes song was one of the worst Bond themes ever recorded. Bring back the Propellerheads and Shirley Bassey!

This movie has me missing a little bit of the kitschy nature of the Brosnan films, but more than anything I miss the wide shots of Bond films of old; call me old-fashioned, but I like seeing what's going on in a scene rather than a bunch of close-ups that show just how hard 007 is straining himself.

    Wikibot... You've become very opinionated.

Lies! This isn't our Wikibot! It is an impostor!

    You're right, that's not a wiki bot!

The Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey movies look pretty good, but then again I like Adam Sandler and Jim Carrey movies.

Also, P432689, the story behind your username on your homepage was awesome.

I have no objection to Jim Carrey's Yes Man, but Adam Sandler would suck in a children's movie.

Wow, we have member of the green party in the orange belt? Impressive. But sad thing is if he had sold out and joined the democratic party, he probably would have won. (Read P432689's home page for this to make sense.)

I wish people read my home page. That'd rock.

Peter is an old friend of mine (and Paul's and Geoff's and Kyle's) and also happened to run for Congress with the Green party. He got 12,000 some-odd votes too, and against an incumbent Democrat in California no less, so I'd say he did pretty well.

Peter, I will agree with you on some of the editing in action scenes. In the opening car chase, I thought 007 was killed by an oncoming truck, only to see it was a bad guy's car a second or two later. It might have helped if their cars looked a little different in high speed. Or, you know, if some of the shots weren't so damn close up that they lost all sense of spacial relation.

And speaking of title cards... Geoff and I kept joking that their central location on the screen and unique font made them so distinctive that they looked like the title of the movie. Why would you rename your movie 2/3rds of the way into the film?!?

I miss Wings' participation in Bond theme-playing.

Yeah. Jack White is really good normally, but he and Alicia did a subpar job on the opening score. I guess it was an attempt to draw in teens like me who have no appreciatiation for classic rock except for that which is in Guitar Hero. Personally, though, I like more than Guitar Hero, for I like the Beetles, Wings, AC-DC, and Zep, none of which are featured in Guitar Hero.

On a minutely related sidenote, Stairway to Heaven DOES NOT have a satanic message hen played backwards. People on youtube speed it up and slow it down at points to alter the sounds. My friend's dad owns a vinyl copy and played it backwards for us.

I did like Quantum of Solace, though. Execpt for the first two action scenes with the boats and the cars. I agree with Mario in saying that the car scene was not shot well, as the shaking camera effect was horrid and they had no overhead shots, to give you an idea of what is going on. These opinions are similar for the boat scene

I'm looking forward to Valkyrie, which seems pretty original. Why is this thread stickied, though?
