Christmas presents

edited January 2009 in General
Okay, I need a little advice from everyone here.

Christmas is coming, and my parents are yelling at me to give them gift ideas, so they can mail me stuff to open on Christmas morning. Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea what I want. Not being in the US makes me forget what's good, what I want, etc.

What do you all suggest? What is everyone asking for? What do you all hope for? Give me suggestions! Books, video games, anything is fine! Smaller, easier to pack items are preferred.

There's a new Castlevania game out for DS... Order of Ecclesia. It's supposed to be pretty sweet.

Ask for a box of magnum condoms. That's what I asked my mom for. That, and the December issue of Playboy and a bacon cheeseburger.

I asked my mom for a new set of stainless steel cookware for my birthday and I got it. I have become too pragmatic.

I hope to receive these from my friends in the next week or so.

Ask them to send cookies. You can eat those and be done with it.

This year, I feel I am just too old for all this. I'm happy just to have Christmas dinner and not have to worry about giving/receiving 'stuff' .. bleh.

    I'm asking for socks.

The 8 year old Jake would hate who he's become if he could see me today.

Ow. That's pretty harsh. I'm asking for shirts, and my younger soul would be pretty mad at me, even if they look like this:

I was always told that if I don't ask for anything I'd just get socks and underwear.

These days I can't help but think socks would actually be kinda nice. Although I would NOT trust my family to get me something that would be anything but wickedly embarrassing and totally useless to me, especially due to the "underwear" part.

In any case we aren't doing the whole gift exchange thing this year. Really a shame I guess, but then the gift wrapping has escalated to the point that it's been brushing into health hazard territory. I mean, where to you go after you've gone beyond the point of welding a gift into a metal box? Mind you this is AFTER it's been wrapped in countless layers of wire, duct tape, and shrink wrap. And spray foam insulation. And the gift is then hidden. Outside. In a hole in the ground. Under a snow bank.

Get ye map and ye power tools. Ye be lookin' fer well fortified buried treasure. Arrr.

(Ok, so that was a bit of hyperbole. No gifts were buried in a hole under a snow bank outside.)

Between this and the day of meat, I find that I wish I was in your family.

Okay, let's go down the book road. What good books are people reading? I like fantasy mostly. Some sci-fi. I like R.A. Salvatore and I've read just about all of his Drizzt related books.

Also Wii games. What good stuff is coming out, or has come out? And same for DS. Forget PSP, as I have Star Ocean 2 on it now, and that will suck up a good portion of my life already.

Have you read Terry Pratchetts Discworld books? They're satirical fantasy, I usually find myself chuckling at least once per page. But he also has some serious moments in each book that lead me to believe he could do an entire novel completely seriously if he wanted.

They just released Animal Crossing: City Folk if I'm not mistaken, but I'm not sure if I'll get bored of it as quickly as I did with Wild World. And I'm looking to get The World Ends With You for the DS, anyone else gotten that? All the ratings I saw were very positive.

I have not, but I have heard of them! Maybe I will ask for Discworld. Andrew has talked about that before I think.

I've only read 'Thud!', but I enjoyed it.

You also might look for his collaboration with Neil Gaiman, 'Good Omens'.

Also, House of Leaves. I haven't read it yet, but I've heard nothing but good things about it.

You spelled it wrong. It's spelled "House of Leaves". And it's friggin' awesome.
  • edited December 2008
I must third House of Leaves.

Okay, I'll ask for some Discworld books. What's the name of the first and second book in the series? I don't want to read them out of order.

And who wrote House of Leaves? Is that also Terry Pratchett?
  • edited December 2008
I don't know about House of Leaves, but the first Discworld book is 'The Colour of Magic' and the second is 'The Light Fantastic'. Though, they're not really in strict chronological order.

Between the four or five different main sets of characters, the books are in mostly chronological order. The biggest jumps from some sort of timeline occur when he does books with one time characters. But he tends to reference events from older books and usually adds characters that appear later, so it's worth it to read them in the order they were published.

House of Leaves is by Mark Z. Danielewski.

Huh. I had always thought they were really loose in their order. But that was just from hearsay... I've only read one book.

So, they're like the Redwall series? Not the story progressions, the chronological stuff.

Unless you already have one I'm getting an iPod Touch.

Ipods are lamzor, I say go with a Walkmen. Does your Ipod play the radio, in addition to it's audio playback abilities?
And fyi, I'm completely serious. People see me with my Walkmen and think I'm trying to be cool. No, I have cassette tapes, and I'm listening to them. God damn it.

Also, get the DVD of the British Television adaptations, they're wonderful.

I know someone who listens to cassette tapes on a walkman still. Also, walking around with a huge boombox on your shoulders is way cooler.

It can just get apps on the App Store and it can do anything. Can your Walkman use the internet?
