I have played it on and off, but mostly off. I usually go for the violent games, but sometimes it’s nice to sit back farm some land. Though I haven't played it in a long time…
I'm not sure this thread is face-palm worthy Blob, don't be so quick to judge. This could turn out to be an enlightening conversation of the popularity of life simulation games in general! Though it would've been better as a poll.
I for one have never played a Harvest Moon game of any subtitle, but I was quite a fan of the Sims before Sims 2 showed up.
Now, now. Let's not be too hasty with the facepalm action. While there is no real content to be seen, and no apparent impetus for making a thread on this subject, it is possible there is merit to the subject yet.
On that note I do not play, nor have I ever played Harvest Moon. I do think I can recall there bing threads on this subject, however. Still, search results do not reveal much. I suspect I am remembering things from the BC (Before Cataclysm) era of the OB or even the Inksandwich which is sometimes featured in the legends, myths, and ancient histories of the forum.
EDIT: I must also remember to refresh my browser prior to posting, so I don't find myself repeating the words of others.
I am a very big fan of the early Harvest Moon games... I enjoyed the SNES version and the Playstation version (Back to Nature) a LOT. Then I tried the first GameCube version and it sucked... so I haven't tried any other Harvest Moon iteration. It's not worth my time and money, though I am interested in trying that futuristic/combat Harvest Moon.... Rune Factory, I think it's called?
Hmm... I tried the Gamecube version of Harvest Moon for my first version, and I got the same impression Andrew did. I played it for maybe an hour, and then I was like "Eh, I'll stick to Animal Crossing." Then Eric got me the DS version, and I again played that for maybe an hour tops, but honestly I don't really play ANY video games anymore so that didn't stand a very fair chance.
I used to LOVE the Sims. I played the original game entirely too much, and The Sims 2 I also played entirely too much, but a little less extreme. I just love the sense of humor that the developers have. Woohoo? Public Woohoo? I also got the university expansion pack, and was quite delighted to find out that having *ahem* woohoo with your professors raises your GPA. My girl character breezed through college after her fiance had graduated
I think I just love making horribly corrupted characters. Another reason why one of my favorite games EVER is GTA San Andreas. I swear, it's like a mix of The Sims and GTA. You maintain weight, you go on dates, you can have a variety of jobs (kinda), you build up stats, you buy fancy things... but you also carry around ridiculous weapons, have gang wars, steal vehicles, mug people on the streets, and randomly murder whomever you'd like. It's the perfect mix for me!! You get the customizing bits of the sims (you can DRESS HIM UP omg), and the corruption of GTA.
So uhh Harvest Moon! Yeah I played it for like an hour, it's aight. My brother was really into it for a while, so I watched him mine (how i mine 4 fish?), but yeah. I never got into it.
I have played just about every single one. Rune Factory is pretty good (although they seriously de-emphasized farming in the first one, the second was an improvement). There's something comforting about repetitive farming tasks.
I don't know how the Wii version stacks up though.
I thought the gamecube one was pretty good, although I never got too far in it after my memory card crapped out on me. I played a lot of Harvest Moon 64, got all of the buildngs and expansions and had a kid and everything. The GBA one was kind of ridiculous if I remember, you got some kind of house in the mountains if you played for 50 years, and I only made it to the third or fourth.
This actually might be a good place for me to ask a question... since I do love the SNES and PSX Harvest Moons so much (I loved the emphasis on farming and upgrading your farm), which newer Harvest Moons would you all recommend? Keep in mind I didn't enjoy the GameCube version... I didn't like the increased emphasis on socialization and family-raising.
I played a lot of Harvest Moon 64 as well. It can be a relaxing game. I always liked making a huge field for my cows to graze in. Mining minerals, chillin' with the mayor, building a greenhouse. All of that jazz.

I've heard good things about both Rune Factory and Harvest Moon on the Wii though.
