I thought they spent too much effort in Transformers 1 making the Autobots look detailed. There were too many moving parts that just seemed to be there for the sake of showing off how much money Michael Bay had to piss away.
I get the feeling that in 50 years that's going to look really retarded in hindsight, much like Darth Vader's little button box on his chest is now.
Yeah, that button box was BAD. And have you ever Seen Darth Vader concept art? It's pretty depressing... he looked AWESOME in those drawings. Much more like a shadowy deathstalker than a massive hulk of black plastic.
I can't remember where I saw the concept art drawings... some movie... but I can't remember what it was..
EDIT: Found something that's kinda reminiscent of what I saw... this image.
The one I actually saw was a whole body sketch and he was much more flowy, slender, and streamlined, but this kinda shows that more sinister, shadowy look, I think.
The original Ralph McQuarrie concept drawings for Vader were certainly scarier than what we actually got in the movie, but I don't think they would've worked as well. Sure, he'd look great marching down the corridors of the Tantave IV skewering rebels left and right but that permanent scowl moulded into his helmet would have just looked silly in the dialogue scenes on board the Death Star and would have made it difficult to develop him into the more fleshed-out character he became in episodes V and VI.
Then again, the mask was originally intended to only be worn in the Tantave IV scene as it was meant to be special gear to be worn in situations where sudden exposure to vacuum was a significant possibility (such as a firefight inside a starship's airlock.) He would have had a normal face for the rest of the film, but Lucas thought that the mask looked so cool that he decided to have Vader wear it the whole time.
EDIT: And I think this is what you were looking for:
I did see that in my search, and it's certainly a good example, but not what I saw... I saw something much more basic, just a pencil sketch, but he looked even cooler than that.
Whatever. You know Transformers 2 will be extremely sparse when it comes to, well, good plot or writing, but damned if it won't look extremely awesome.
Does it look like i care about plot or anything like that?
You know, you've posted so many that I feel like it MUST be one of those... but for some reason I don't think like it is one of those... it was a side view, full-body shot, with a cape that was billowing backward and a much darker look... but I could just be imagining. Regardless, you get points for being able to pull out all those pictures.
I had on my sad-puppy face when I realized I'm the only nerd around here who likes the sparklies.
Then I confirmed that Megan Fox is bi. I am happy again.
Also, I once saw a onesie (baby outfit thing) with Darth Vader's head on it. The text was: "Who's Your Daddy?" but unfortunately they didn't have any in my daughters' sizes.
