I actually tried encoding it in .mp3 but the quality loss was noticeable, mostly due to the "crackly" effect in the original file (which occured entirely by accident when I was trying to convert from .mid, but which I decided to keep 'cause it sounded cool.) I might try again at a higher bitrate.
There was definitely something wrong, but it wasn't the ogg file so much as my alarming lack of ability to play them! I have now corrected this problem and all is well with the world again.
