ComicPress or Webcomic?

edited July 2010 in Comics
Which is better? I don't much about either so any info would be great.

I plan on getting one of them up and running on Davey's Place, right now I have a simple hand crafted link index, which sucks.

Also, if you know of any other webcomic apps that might be helpful, please let me know.

Thanks.

I never bothered with fancy software. My site is all Notepad.

HTML is the finest code in all the land.

Yeah, that's true, though I don't really feel like handcoding a whole website.

    <--Elitist Coder Snob.

I work on web stuffs for pay. Why on earth would I not code my own site if I was going to make one? The biggest irony of all is perhaps my lack of one. But then, having a focus in Flash would probably lead me to use it at some point and I know someone would just whine about it. "Fuck you!" they'd say. "It doesn't work on my iPad OR my iPhone!" they'd say. To which I would reply with a hearty laugh. Perhaps with a malicious slant.

I mostly use Smultron for all my coding (Java,C++,etc.), it's a fine multi-format coder for Macs. When I'm looking for some fancier editing I use Dreamweaver (Mostly for HTML,PhP,MySQL stuff)

I never have an issue with flash sites except those ones with like 800 flash objects on the site and it takes the page forever to load.

Basically, if you're gonna have a flash site, don't have flash ads.

THIS IS A DISCUSSION ABOUT COMICPRESS VERSUS WEBCOMIC SO SHUT UP ALL OF YOU.

    Thanks. :)

Hand written and Flash (wouldn't recommend Flash but still) can both do the same freaking thing.

I apologize for trying to help out with better/different options. Ya know like Sqaure Space. (Though that one costs money, it does include hosting though.)

All the newbies freak out about on-topicness. Look, read every other thread on the OB, none of them stay on topic always. It'll return to the main topic eventually, don't sweat it.

Threads go off topic. Get over it. If anyone wants to address the topic still, they will.

    EDIT: Nice timing.

You're sure having to do a lot of admin'ing recently.

Such is the price I pay for spending way too much of my time here.

X'o'Lore sounds like me, we should be friends.

Though EditPlus is an improvement on Notepad, just a little.

Also, the correct term is "like herding cats".

    Look, I'm not hand coding.

Has anyone worked with ComicPress or Webcomic here?
  • edited July 2010
I have heard of this ComicPress, but no, I have not used it. Webcomic as a proper noun is foreign to me and I don't know what you are speaking of there.

The truth here is simply that those of us here who have or had a comic at some point have also possessed a desire to handle our own site coding. You might find more pointers on coding a site on this forum than info about 3rd party comic site setups. Just a guess though. Most here probably aren't expert site coders either.

    Ah, I see.

Thanks anyway, I guess my best bet is to PM Mario to see what he knows about ComicPress.

To Any Mod: You can lock this now if you're so inclined.

Why would we lock a perfectly good off-topic thread?
  • edited July 2010
You might try it out and see if it works, and if not get something else. Not too hard to find free.

Also I understand being dead set against hand coding the site, but it's really not too difficult until you get into java scripting and stuff and you can do whatever you want with it.

And I hardly see locking the thread necessary.
  • edited July 2010
Locking threads is for when they become all super dramatic and whatnot. As it stands, there's no reason not to keep a perfectly good thread open in case somebody else wants to use it in the future.

As long as we're at it, let's outline OB culture for his reference.

    1. As mentioned before, threads very easily go off topic. If you don't like threads going off topic, people will purposely piss you off. So sit back and enjoy the direction the thread takes. It will eventually go back on topic. Maybe.

    2. Don't create threads if the topic better fits in an existing thread. This may seem obvious, but sometimes people don't think about it. Obviously, we don't expect you to look at every thread from the last 4 years, but I'd say at least check to see if a similar thread is on the first page or two.

Umm... I could probably write more, but I feel kind of weird outlining a charter of OB protocol, now that I think about it. Basically, just relax, have fun, and be yourself. That's probably the most important.
  • edited July 2010
I've got no problem with off-topic banter, unless it's a question or help topic, and the question has yet to be answered. So we're all good. :)
  • edited July 2010
To be fair the slight off topicness of this thread was other solutions.

So basically you're going out of the way to ruin all subtlety. Got it.

    'Tis true.

But see, here's the thing, I coded a comic-like website once before, it wasn't difficult or anything, it's just that using CP or WC would be that much easier, plus it's got the whole "legions of wordpress pulgins" thing goin' on. And WordPress is teh roxorz.

I have an amendment. Most people aren't too serious about perfect grammar and syntax stuff. If someone's giving you a hard time or nit-picking, it's most likely a joke, not serious criticism. But, please try. If it's obvious that you're not even making an effort, you will be set aflame.
