Game of Thrones HBO series

edited August 2012 in Movies and Shows
I couldn't find an immediate thread for this, so here we are.

I am crazy excited for the Game of Thrones series to come out next year on HBO. I have been following up on casting over the last month or two, and I want to see how many others here are interested in it too. For reference, here's a good database of all the casting so far:

http://winter-is-coming.net/features/cast/

My favorite castings so far are Tywin Lannister, Loras Tyrell, Peter Baelish, Robert Baratheon, and Samwell Tarly. And of course, Tyrion. Others like Varys, Renly, and Hodor are not exactly as I imagined them, but I think they still do them justice nonetheless.

However, I'm still not sold on Cersei. Hopefully I'll change my mind if they give her a full head of thick blond curls, but I'm having trouble imagining it.

Anyone else? Comments, thoughts, opinions?

I am unfamiliar with any of this. I don't know what to think.

I've always loved who they got for Arya. She's very weird-looking and I think it suits her character.

    The Cleganes look good, too.

Well, I like the guy who plays Sam, but I imagined him WAY fatter than that. Maybe they'll fatten him up for this.

WOW. The girl they just got to play Dany is GORGEOUS. I think that'll work really well. And of course the guy who's playing Viserys is just PERFECT. He does creepy so well.

Well, this makes me happy. But I WANT IT NOW!

For those of you unfamiliar with the series, it's based on the Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R.R. Martin. Very good, gritty fantasy.

I personally pictured Bronn like 10-15 years younger, but I don't think his age was ever really revealed in the book anyway. And Gregor isn't as big as I'd like, though I can't imagine you can find many 8 foot tall actors around these days. I guess I'll have to settle for this guy, who's just 7 feet.

    Sigh.

And yes, omg Dany is hot.

Okay! It's finally here! Post reactions! If you haven't seen the show yet, what are you waiting for! It's dark fantasy TV drama! You will enjoy it!

    Well that was fast.

HBO renews 'Game of Thrones' for second season!
    Winter is coming — back!

HBO has renewed its fantasy series Game of Thrones after airing only one episode. The show’s second season will likely debut next year and will be based on George R.R. Martin’s second book in his Song of Ice and Fire series, A Clash of Kings.

“We are delighted by the way David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have brought George R.R. Martin’s amazing book series to the screen, and thrilled by the support of the media and our viewers,” said Michael Lombardo, president of HBO. “This is the continuation of an exciting creative partnership.”
As previously reported, a Thrones renewal was likely even before the show premiered given HBO’s big investment in creating the world of Westeros and the potential back-end from international sales and DVD.

Sunday’s premiere ratings were fairly healthy too, with the drama delivering 4.2 million viewers across three airings.

Renewed before the second episode? impressive.
I saw the first one last week, though I'm a bit ashamed of having seen the show and never read the books. It's good though!
  • edited April 2011
Do not be ashamed... those books are huge megalithic bricks. Besides, it's fun to know people who haven't read the books but are watching the show. So, what did you think? Do you mind giving a short review? Do you understand everything?

I sort of envy you, actually. You don't know the giant clusterfuck of shit coming up in the later episodes. I, and I'm sure Andrew too, recited Jaime's last line of the episode verbatem, because it's just so fucking good. We knew it was coming.
  • edited April 2011
Well, you may have recited it verbatem, but I recited it verbatim. Cause that's the cool thing to do.

But yes, I have to say that the ending of that episode was brilliant. It was the PERFECT place to end it.

They also got the optimal amount of fucked up shit in that episode... rape? Check. Incest? Check. Child killing? Check. Beheading? Check. Awesome.

I was drunk! I was going to post in the love thread for you all, but I passed out on my bed before I could :(

To be honest the amount of sex was a bit off putting, but I understand that they have to establish these relationships somehow, and when the relationship is rape or incest they sort of have to go in that direction. My mom was just a bit weirded our by the fact that everyone did it doggy-style.

Other than that it was very good! Despite the numerous occurrences going on it was well organized in the end. I'll definitely watch it again!

The depiction of sex and degradation of women is something a few people have commented on. I guess what I'd say in defense of it is that Martin was trying to present women as they would have been treated in the 15th century; largely they were sex objects/baby carriers. Though I guess I'd say that when I read the section in the first book where we first see Cersei and Jaime having sex, I kinda pictured it in one of their rooms in a bit more intimate of a position.
  • edited April 2011
Indeed, well, the second episode toned the sex down a little, so that's good.

Yeah, not quite so much... and Dany's getting a bit more confident, and I think that helps. Very pleased with the second episode, BTW... I'm remembering some of the emotions I felt reading through the first time, and they're capturing this world so perfectly well. And I love the children actors they have.

I just watched the first episode that Ryan had me download the other week earlier today. I liked it! I wish I had HBO :(

So... that's the whole season. I sort of forgot about this thread.

    Who watched it?
  • edited June 2011
I didn't. I feel like I'd rather read the book. Actually there some cousins were visiting this past weekend and one of them actually had the book. It was advertising the HBO series on the cover. That sort of thing kinda depresses me sometimes. I had the same issue seeing Lord of the Rings books with images from the movies on them.

    Tonight we'll finish it.

Thank God, its not just me!

Huh, the season's already over? I only watched the first episode... one of my good friends who is living with me right now LOVED the show though. We don't have HBO over here, so he would go over to a friend's house whenever there was a new episode so he could watch.

Weeks go by too fast anymore. Does that mean I'm old now?
  • edited June 2011
Yep. Go watch it. It's amazing.

As you get older, time speeds up. My grandparents are in their 80s. I shudder to think of how fast time moves for them.

    Also, watch Game of Thrones.

The last time I was with Greg's grandfather (who is also in his 80s), he and Greg got into a conversation about something that happened like 5 years before, and Greg's grandpa said something along the lines of "Oh, when you're my age, 5 years ago seems like yesterday."

5 years is one fourth of my lifetime. D:
  • edited June 2011
It's not even a fifth of mine. I remember 5 years ago pretty well but more because it was a time that left a strong impression. Quite busy back in '06 I was.

Yeah, the show was great. I haven't been posting on here at all recently by the way. Why? I'm halfway through the third book now. Andrew lies not, these books are monstrous. I'm reading on a kindle and its weird to read for four hours straight, look down at the percent marker and only be 7% ahead of where you were before.

I feel I must apologise. Obviously I've been hearing a lot about game of thrones for the last year, of course, but have never actually watched it.

My reason was that, aside from hearing it had a lot of sex in it, I expected it would be the usual dry medieval fare. That is until I read Tyrion's quote regarding Gods being cunts and the need to sail immediately to the island where a sixteen breasted Goddess was worshipped.

So I picked up season one and watched the first four episodes end-to-end. Goddamnit was it good. Like, insanely good. It isn't perfect (at least not in season one, maybe the following flaws are fixed in season two), for example the sex is a bit too heavy-handed and gratuitous and in a lot of scenes the directing makes it painfully obvious as to what will happen next.

That aside however, I'm pretty solidly hooked, as is Vienna in fact.

The sex is pretty gratuitous in the books, but I agree there are some scenes where boobs are added because it's HBO and why not.

    Three words: Demon vagina baby.

    Fucking hell.
