Downtime explained.

edited July 2023 in Forum Support
Welcome back! If you look around, you may notice that everything's pretty much exactly the same! "What's the dealio?" you may find yourself asking in a manner inconsistent with your usual speech patterns. Well I'll tell you.

Last night we completed a task two years in the works and moved The Orange Belt and all its subsidiaries from Stef's Dreamhost account to my own. We were hesitant to initiate this action because of the risks of losing all these important threads about horse porn (and the memory of the '05 meltdown is still fresh in our minds), but we crossed our fingers and pulled the trigger...

...then I did the database backup wrong and thought I lost everything and considered ritual seppuku. But this morning I sorted it all out! BEST STORY EVER.

While I was uprooting the Universe, I figured we might as well update the forum software as well, so we're now packing the latest version of vBulletin we can run without renewing our license for unreasonably high fees! I'm hoping this update will carry some more powerful spambot-combatting tools.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make sure everything's working okay. Since updating vBulletin requires replacing all the directories of pages and images, it may take some additional manual labor to restore our custom themes. I'm glad I bothered to sort our images for these themes and I think everything's in place, but if you see any broken images or links, post a reply in this thread and I'll try to sort it out.

Thanks for not dying in the forum's absence, and we're glad to have you back!

    First post.

Eat it bitches. I win the internet.

Hey I was just thinking about what to say!

Man, thinking about stuff always slows me down.

EDIT: There is a "reload this page" button that seems to be missing an image?

Almost forgot: tell me which theme you're using too.

Welcome back, OB! I missed you for those 12 or so hours!

I go default. But For SCIENCE! forum is looking good.
  • edited August 2010
I always use For SCIENCE! It's basically the most badass forum theme I've ever encountered, so I really have no choice in the matter.

I'll try and clean it up one of these days. I technically have the free time to achieve something useful now.

Oh man, I hate doing any kind of major updating/moving with forums, it's always so nerve wracking.

I'm using the default theme, everything seems to be fine.
  • edited August 2010
Confession: I've had it defaulted to TimberLake for awhile now.
  • edited August 2010
That's probably not good for your long term health.
  • edited August 2010
    important threads about horse porn

    damn straight

I think I'd choose the dappled theme over Timberlake if I wanted something colorful and I'll confess to not really liking sandalwood. Creamsicle is alright.
  • edited August 2010
I was afraid we'd have another crash. I cried a lot.
  • edited August 2010
That's just the explaination they want you to believe. The true reason for the downtime must be more devious for them to cover it up with such a lie!

Holy crap! When did the Dappled theme enter the main rotation? I am officially a happy camper.
  • edited August 2010
You didn't know that? It's been there for a while!
  • edited August 2010
I'm all about the creamsicle up in here

dappled is definitely one we spent a lot of time on to get the balance of color down. For a long time I was using Dot Matrix just because I like the Game Boy tones, but I just love that TimberLake picture so much!
  • edited August 2010
What is this Dot Matrix you speak of?
  • edited August 2010
Theme for the same-named forum. I haven't decided if I'm going to open it up for general consumption; I like to test the themes out a bit first, and there hasn't been any demand for it anyway.

But yes: everything seems unbroken now and the migration went smoothly! I'll unstick the thread now, and let it slowly waft into oblivion.

A good thread never dies, it just fades away...
  • edited August 2010
I kinda like Dot Matrix.... just sayin'.
  • edited August 2010
    Waft is a funny word.
  • edited August 2010
How is this thread supposed to waft into oblivion if you people keep posting in it? (OH SNAP!!! A hypocrite I am.)
