Avengers movie (spoilers?)

edited May 2012 in Movies and Shows
I have managed to see this "Avengers" movie some English sorts were jabbering about earlier this week since apparently it came out earlier there than here.

I recommend you see this movie if you have not. Unless you hated the Ironman movie in which case go away.

It was brilliant. And DAMN YOU for seeing it before America! It's got a captain of America in it!

Is anyone else confused as to what happened to Banner's pants? When he fell from the carrier, he was wearing them. When he landed, he was "buck-ass nude."

I choose not to think about how a man may suddenly be without pants. I simply accept that he does not have pants at this time and move on.

I liked how they made everyone look useful. Even if they had to relegate Cap to "order the police to protect the citizens so it looks like he has something useful to do" level.

Overall I enjoyed the movie, but two things bothered me, because I am one of those people who must find something to nitpick.

    1. The entire premise of the airship scenes was fucking stupid. Ok, you've got a giant airship and it's pretty bad ass, but it stays aloft with just four giant fans. The very first time I saw it I wondered what would happen if one of them died somehow. My first guess is that it would topple over, since one corner would be horribly off balance.

And then apparently these fans are TOTALLY EASY to take out. Hawkeye was able to destroy one of these fans with however much explosive he could pack into that tiny ass arrow.

The logical thing is to have more fans, backup fans, or something. Too many fans could create vortex problems, but you could have adjacent fans not running and just turn them on when there's a problem. I dunno. I can accept the presence of demigods, the suspension of disbelief at the biology of the Hulk, but that airship just pissed me off. It only existed so it could maybe crash.

    2. Spider-Man's absence in such a massive New York fight seemed odd to me. New York is his turf, and I believe in the Marvel Universe these guys all exist simultaneously. Actually I'm pretty sure the issue is that Spider-Man is owned by a different studio, but Hollywood could also just stop circlejerking everything happening in New York.

Spidey's movie rights are owned by Sony. For the sake of this movie universe, Peter Parker is just a normal teenage nerd.

EDIT: And yes, the fan boat was ultimately useless. I found myself thinking "So it crashes...it's still a boat, just land in water..."

I'm sorry to say that Spider-Man would have been hopelessly outclassed in a battle against an army of flying aliens. His is more of a one-on-one fighting style.

But he could have put a web on the portal, and prevented anyone from getting in!

My brother has a theory (and I agree with it) that the whole reason they are rebooting the Spiderman movie series is so that they can put him in the next Avengers movie. As is, the character has no establishment in the Marvel movie universe's canon.

Again, Spidey's movie rights are owned by Sony, meaning unless Disney decides to shill out the cash for what would be basically a cameo, he's not showing up.

The reboot was done because there were complications in writing a 4th Spider Man movie with Tobey Maguire's continuity, and Maguire and Sam Raimi wouldn't sign on for the project unless the script was good enough.

Why did the ship need to fly in the first place? It didn't seem to be accomplishing anything up there besides cloaking itself (which didn't seem to work anyway).

The ship needed to fly so it would be more awesome. The cloaking was just to look cool and stop normal civilians from seeing a large airship and freaking out.
