Disney buy Lucasfilms for $4b, Episode VII in 2015

Wat.

Well, this is unexpected. A new star wars film might be good if George Lucas is kept the fuck away from it, however.

George Lucas wants NOTHING to do with Star Wars anymore I assure you.

Darth Vader force choking Deadpool in Kingdom Hearts? I might actually buy that game again.

Seriously though, this is basically George Lucas retiring. Sold out to Disney. Tired of being hassled by endless nerd rage. Now he just has to decide what to do with a couple billion in cash and I think a whole lot of Disney stock if I read that right.

Of course it is. He did say he was done with large movies a while back, sick of the fan base attacking him for what he sees as "Fixing" his series. Said he'd rather stick to smaller more indie films as a hobby.

And indeed you did read that right. From what I'm aware it's 2 Billion dollars and 40 million shares of stock. Sounds like a pretty solid investment to me.

He already decided what to do with the cash ($4 billion): he's donating all of it to education. Pretty classy.

I think this is all nothing but good news. Disney's already proven its ability to turn around a movie franchise with Marvel, and I think they can do it again with Star Wars. After the prequels, I didn't want to ever see another Star Wars film again, but I bet Disney can do something interesting with it.

The real question is, what will this new trilogy be about? The six previous films (despite their varying quality) told a self-contained story arc about Anakin Skywalker, from childhood to adulthood, his fall from grace, his reign as Darth Vader and and his redemption and death. They also told a larger political story of government corruption, hostile takeovers and rebellion, including the entire rise and fall of the Galactic Empire. Where exactly do you go from there? Vader is gone, Luke is presumably working toward rebuilding the Jedi Order and the Rebellion is reinstating the Republic. Assuming they won't pay any attention at all to the various novels written in this time period, they're going to have to come up with some new foe to oppose everyone.

    My vote's for Pete.

You know what I always find silly? When a rich person donates a giant pile of money to charity, and there's always those people who are like "yeah, but compared to what he has, it hardly affects him". Why does it have to affect him? It's still a giant pile of money.

Though that's not really the case here, as that is a really, really giant pile of money. It's just something I've noticed in comments sections of articles like these.

Anyways, hopefully Disney invents some cuter aliens. I've never found Star Wars aliens to be very appealing.

In case someone hasn't watched this, it's pretty funny. Somewhat relevant.

I'm not really a HUGE Star Wars fan, but since I started dating Greg I've learned a bunch of random facts about the two movie trilogies as well a bit of the back story of some of the novels. Since there's a whole variety of different story lines they could do, I'm wondering whether they're going to pick a story that has already been written or if they're going to go completely original? My bet is they are going to follow the Skywalker family and just kind of make it a sequel of sorts. A 'this is where they are now' kind of story. I'd be okay with that!

From what I'm aware, they've said they're making new original stories.
