All of us miss each other. (But mostly we miss Jake)

Hello! Yes, I remember you! "Bearded guy who met Ryan" could be a number of us by now. Dude gets around. Jakey, or myself I'd imagine since you know the first two on his list IRL to my memory and I don't recall Hamelin being particularly bearded and you mentioned Mario separately. And one of them on his list is you.

EDIT: Good luck on offspring #2! May you find sleep where you can.

    I'm one of those!

Ha! Tanya, congrats on your upcoming colorful baby!! Can't believe Hannah is 2.5 now, that means Esmé is even older. Doesn't seem like that much time has gone by, but I suppose it has!

I've heard video game programming can be miserable, what with the strict deadlines and all. I consider myself dev-lite since I mostly just work with SQL all day, with the occasional template ready php script. How's everyone else doing?

I brilliantly waited until the last minute to do my homework for the week and then got an assignment that had a question that sorta asked me to solve the subprime mortgage crisis by applying the sort of vague and mostly fluff decision making principals covered in the 2nd chapter of our book. How do you even answer questions like that? The book is insanely dull and full of vague jargon that doesn't seem like it even means much outside the context of the book itself and it doesn't even actually define its own jargon very well soooo yeah. Kinda not happy right now since I blew all my time trying to fumble up some kinda response to that crap and now I'm late with my other homework which is actually at least somewhat interesting and dramatically more relevant. I partly blame myself I guess, but blugh. Not happy.

    Sooo. I guess that's how I'm doing?

The rule of school: Writing a lot is basically the same as knowing a lot, in terms of what grade you end up with. I used to lose points for writing perfectly correct answers that weren't long enough.

    I think I have a research direction!

Man, the Orange Belt is old. I just went back and fixed a broken link on a picture I drew eight years ago.

You guys... you are being way too practical with what you learn from school. What, are you thinking professors are going to focus on something that would actually be valuable throughout your career??? HA! Nooo, nooo.... you just focus on bullshit academic/theoretical BS that will give you a good grade for no more than one semester you're ever paying thousands of dollars for.

At least that's how my school worked...

I'm doing okay. Still in school as a CS major, but I'm judging the local Magic tournaments on the side. Current plan is to get an internship locally sometime next year, I've got some good contacts through my parents and the local M:tG community so I'm kind of a shoe-in for the company I'm looking at. Long term goal is probably to move to the Seattle area; it's got a large number of software and web based companies and startups and is the center of the Magic community in the US, being the location of the WotC headquarters as well as several very large game shops. It's also one of the safer large cities, which is good for me, because ideally I'll be able to be mostly open about my trans status. Basically it's an ideal location.

Lauren, were you being bitter about your own degree or?
  • edited February 2014
I was also drunk when I posted that, but yes, bitter about the disconnect between academia and real world experience. Not only from my own experience but also from what I've heard about from other majors at the university I went to. The university I went to is also a big research school, so that probably has a lot to do with it. I was taught mostly theory that would be amazing for either a career in academia or for some really high end job (that I would probably only obtain after getting a phd). It's frustrating knowing that the most important thing I got from getting my degree is the piece of paper that said I got my degree. That being said, I'm still very thankful I have that piece of paper... I doubt I would be where I am today without putting my graduation date on my resume.

NoLonger, glad to hear you're doing well! I wasn't aware of your trans status. That can be super tough, so good on ya for being honest with yourself. Despite being in Texas, Austin is also a big friendly accepting city filled with software companies and tech startups if you ever found yourself looking for other options.

I've never played a game of Magic the Gathering, but I know quite a few people who are absolutely obsessed. I believe that's my main reason for never trying it, same reason I never tried out WoW or other highly addictive games :) I put in far too many hours into my Sims family, and I feel that would be just the tip of the iceberg.

I got into MtG because there's nothing much else to do in Pierre for someone like me. It was probably a mistake financially, but at least it's something to do. I'm getting less enthusiastic lately though. I think it's because I'm getting ready to move away from this place.

    Just to reiterate:
John. I want to see all your old Cramped Bitmaps. Where be they?!
  • edited March 2014
    No old bitmaps heah.

I have them on a laptop in my closet that I haven't powered up in 6 years. The laptop, not the closet. I powered up the closet a month ago.

    City Faaace!

    ...Hi Hamelin. How are things?

A chat would be dandy. I should probably log in to skype a lot more often and maybe try to do so when it is not the middle of the night when I do.
