"Spiritual Successor" to Banjo-Kazooie in Development

A couple days ago the website for Playtonic Games launched. They're a new game studio composed of Rareware veterans, mostly from the N64 glory days, and they're going to be working on a new Banjo-Kazooie-style game. Not using the actual characters, of course. Here's a teaser image of the new ones.

I screwed with the brightness and contrast a bit. You can kinda make out the shape of the front one's head and ears.

The project is currently codenamed "Project Ukelele" and they say they want to release it on Steam and Wii U. I will definitely be Wii U-ing this... all the best Rare games are on Nintendo consoles, after all.

  • That sounds great! I have a lot of love for Banjo-Kazooie. Another game like this is A Hat In Time. It's not made by anyone who used to work for Rare (save for some guest tracks by Grant Kirkhope) but it's described as a love letter to N64 collectathons.
  • They just announced some great news regarding the game's soundtrack: It's being worked on by both Grant Kirkhope (Banjo-Kazooie series, Donkey Kong 64, Goldeneye 007) AND David Wise (Donkey Kong Country series, Diddy Kong Racing).

Also Steve Burke, who did some music on Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts'n'Bolts and some other newer games that I haven't played. But I'm sure he's good too!
  • Yesterday they revealed the main characters to this new game, now titled Yooka-Laylee. The characters are Yooka, and Laylee.

They also launched a Kickstarter campaign, which met its initial goal in about 40 minutes and by this point has passed all but one of their stretch goals.

Game's looking pretty good, I'm getting excited. The Kickstarter page also has a couple musical samples, which sound like they've been pulled straight out of Banjo-Kazooie.
  • I never actually played Banjo and Kazooie, but I guess I might have been just slightly too old to buy into the N64 generation completely? Impressive kickstarter though.
  • Banjo-Kazooie was great and continues to hold up. If you've got an Xbox360, you can download it from the arcade.
  • I have precisely no consoles whatsoever and not even a tv that I could hook one to these days. "PC master race" or some such thing I guess. I'll just take your word on the game's excellence as it's unlikely I would get around to trying it out myself. I can't even get to all the games I have now. It would probably be more essential for me to play pokemon if I wanted to pick up on big things I missed anyway.
  • While I'm excited for this game, I'm not going to support a Kickstarter campaign anymore. I've been burned too many times by people playing the nostalgia card.
