It's about time we switched from Him Does Grammar Good Continued to this for discussing the incredibly crappy graphics of the DS and what console rates higher and all that junk.:D
I hate Nintendo for releasing an underpowered console that everyone feels like they HAVE to develop for because it's a foregone conclusion that Nintendo will always lead the handheld market.
I love Nintendo for releasing a console that encourages developers to make 2d games.
Also I like their first party stuff a lot and would get it no matter what console it was on.

The DS graphics are not crappy. They are superior to the graphics of the N64. And graphics don't make a game fun anyway. Why don't you just change your topic title to "bash the DS for no reason"?

Graphics are of course fun to enjoy, but they are by no means a necessity. Hell, I remember freaking out over how awesome the graphics looked in Super Mario Bros 3, because they had recently manufactured a new chip to put in cartridges which allowed for more colors and better graphics. The graphics are of course crappy compared to 2006 graphics, but people still love this game.
I never got into RPGs until FFIV. I missed FFI for the longest time. I never actually got around to playing it until about two years ago. And I loved it on the NES. Yes, it was slow, and yes the graphics were horrid, but the game was still genuinely enjoyable, because the game itself was actually fun. While others may disagree with me on this game, I'm sure there are similar stories of people with older games out there.
If you're going to prioritize graphics over everything else, you're just going to be one of those suckers at EA's teet buying new updates of Madden every year. Go pick of Dawn of Sorrow, Mario Kart, Trauma Center, Phoenix Wright, or any of the other highly acclaimed DS games and see that graphics aren't necessary for making a game fun.
And considering that copies of older games like Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and Valkyrie Profile often cost MORE that new games with highest end graphics, I think it's safe to assume that these games have something much better to offer than graphics.

Therefore, we shouldn't offer graphics!
It's okay to be a huge Nintendo fan and still admit that the DS is underpowered. Especially since it's based on the N64 hardware, which was, much like the DS, an awful system that we endured because we wanted to play Mario and Zelda.

I don't see the DS as underpowered at all. And you're the first person I've ever seen call the DS or N64 awful systems.
So you're saying that the system is awful but you'll play it anyway because the games are so awesome? I'd always assumed that the games themselves define the success/failure of a system more than its specs. Technologically speaking, the N64 had better graphical capability than the PS1 it competed against and almost no loading times; while the PS1 had CD-quality sound, its main call to fame in the beginning was Squaresoft continuing their acclaimed Final Fantasy series exclusively on Sony hardware (a deal which has continued through this day, at least for the numbered series). Conversely, up until the end of its lifespan, the N64 had a fairly abysmal game lineup, and piss-poor third-party support (Capcom and Konami's game licenses can go a long way toward gamers paying attention to your console).
While the DS is technically inferior to the PSP (smaller screens, slower processor, no media player, no web browser), its unique feature set has made it a big winner with developers, which has made it a big winner for quality games. The PSP is currently waning in game releases, and Sony will soon attempt to offset this lack of sales with a PS1 emulator (since the PS1 game disks are presumably too big for the UMD slot, we'll likely soon see the higher-profile titles re-released for PSP; hope they're cheap!). The UMD movie idea failed completely, and many stores are no longer carrying movie titles for PSP (they probably would have faired better if DVDs came pre-bundled with a UMD version, instead of charging almost the same price for a movie you can only play on the PSP devoid of special features). It looks to me like the DS is the winner of this next-gen handheld war.

There's some sort of miscommunication; we're basically on the same side of the argument. I said that I continue to enjoy the DS because of its games, despite it's technical specs. So yes, I wish the system had better graphical capabilities (and somehow still attracted 2D games), but I don't mind too much that it doesn't. The games are in fact the reason why I have one of those and not a PSP. For some reason, everyone here thinks that me saying anything at all negative about the DS means I'm some sort of militant PSP fanboy.
And yes, I do hate the N64 hardware, despite the lack of loading times, but I won't push that discussion in a board full of Nintendo faithful.
edit: Opera has a lot of experience designing browsers for mobile devices. In addition to the obvious utility of this for the DS, it will be important to have a somewhat non-traditional browser to go with the Wii's apparent lack of a keyboard and standard-definition display.
Sorry, I guess I did misunderstand you. And for the record, my love of Nintendo doesn't make me blind of its shortcomings. I don't own a Virtual Boy, after all. ^_^

No, please do. I'm fed up with being surrounded by Nintendo fanboys.
As for the 64: Let's face it, the controllers were completely retarded.
Fair enough, have the little joystick. But don't put it in the freaking middle if the direction buttons on the left aren't going to be used ever. Most uncomfortable controller ever.
007 still kicked serious arse though. Loved that game.
You're meant to hold with by the middle prong, and use the right hand for buttons. I held it using the side prongs and reached the stick and Z button from there with my thumbs.
Never liked the "proper" way it was meant to be held.
I do agree with Apathy, its shape was a bit daft, however it was fun during Mario Party 2 (The last decent one in the series), when you lose to use them as Sai's and hit people with them.
See, I held the whole thing in my right hand, which I also used for all the buttons. My left hand held the analog stick and operated the L button. But I used three finders for the stick instead of just the thumb. It looks really weird, but I beat people, so it didn't matter.
They really should have given it a better name though. Did they not have access to a marketing department? Or even a guy that had taken a couple of advertising/PR classes at uni?
I know it's been on multiple handheld devices already. I just figured that Firefox would be a sound business choice, as it's free, in wide use, and open-source, meaning you've got the whole Firefox team busily programming away with no pesky paycheck or licensing fees to worry about. But Opera will be just fine.
I actually liked the N64 controller. The only time it was ever weird was playing Body Harvest and you had to reach over and hit the L button to open your messages.
I don't get why people care if the DS can do all the useless crap the PSP can do, either. So what if you can't browse the web (yet)? The PSP web browser is barely functional. To whoever it was who said Zelda Comic on the road would be fun, you're likely in for a major disapointment. Most of the comics in the Zelda Comic archive will not load. Instead, you are treated to a nice "There is not enough memory." message (same with all flashes after people pissed and moaned about the web browser not having one. I hope they are all happy now). And the PSP can play music? Big deal. So can my CD player, and its battery life is far superior. And as already stated, UMD movies were a huge flop.
So now you're left with games... The PSP has some great games, sure, but all that other junk just raises the price... Yano, it's that same thing Sony did to the PS3 where it costs $599 and almost everyone expects Nintendo to win the next gen console war.
I admit that $600 is alot for a console, but for Blu-Ray it is cheap. And its DVD capabilities is what won Sony the Japanese console war against Dreamcast.
But I suspect Wii will win it, as Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are gonna be a niche market for a while still, and people won't appreciate having to pay $200 more for a console simply for a technology they probably won't use. Plus the Wii controller rocks :P
He said the Japanese console war, and he's right. PS2s pretty much helped the DVD format catch on over there (I've read that stores which sell DVDs in Japan will, to this day, tout their PS2 compatibility). Sony's track record in pushing media is even better when you consider that the PS1 did the same thing for the CD format in Japan.
It would've been Nintendo touting the CD-ROM in japan, and they'd probably of continued it with a CD Based N64, were it not for Hiroshi Yamauchi being too greedy to let Sony have 25%, which I find fair, as they're the ones who had to use their own money to design this CD Drive.

If they did, I think that it would be a lot more user friendly then the PSP's.
Also, the DS browser is sold separately like a game, which is lame. And it may not come out in the US.

1: I suffer headaches easily, thus I can't play it
2: It cost too much.
The Opera browser is the best choice because they're technology is cheaper from what I've read. But either way, it'll be fun, Zelda Comic on the move
EDIT: There are already browsers for DS, but you need linux, however it'd be fun to try.

Not that I don't like the Dreamcast, I own one, in fact.
