SCIENCE! Movie: Forbidden Planet
Since no one else made a thread, I'm guessing that Stef and I were the only ones that watched the movie. If that's the case, then you all missed out! This movie starred a young Leslie Nielsen in a serious role!
The two things which stand out the most for me in this movie are the soundtrack and the special effects. This movie was the first in history that boasted an entirely electronic soundtrack. This basically means the movie was ambient in the extreme, full of all sorts of neat little sounds but lacking any familiar-sounding orchestral instruments we're all so used to in sci-fi films nowadays. I thought the effect was striking and well-used.
Though obviously movie special effects don't generally stand up to modern CG fare, when viewing Forbidden Planet compared to other films of its time, they definitely put together something special. Disney basically did animation on top of the live-action footage, so it's basically animated electricity and lasers and such, but it works quite well.
