sketchity sketchy sketch, or: mario doodles some devo revo drawings

because i really miss this comic, and want to eventually make it again, i've decided to remind myself how to draw. to accomplish this, i drew a picture! i'll likely draw more over time and throw it all into this thread. we'll start off with the as-yet unseen-outside-of-other-random-drawings female character!

Such an artful day today it seems. Must be the weather.
I'm trying to decide how this character might fit in to the premise as it stands so far with DR. I could take guesses, but that is all.

I'm trying to guess the premise of DR, and I'm coming up with nothing. Very pretty drawing though, I really like the colors.

three months later! i've been thinking long and hard about how i want this comic to go, and i've ultimately decided that i've pretty much been going about it the wrong way. i'll go into more detail about that later, but i wanted to throw something by all y'all, in the form of a radical departure from the sort-of established art style thus far. i'm thinking of laying the story out in quicker smaller samplings than dr v1.0 may have suggested, and i want the art style to convey this, by way of being a little simpler and looser. this is not necessarily the end result of this departure, but i wanted to know what everyone thought about the direction i'm going. the biggest difference: no giant anime eyes. i've been drawing with giant anime eyes for the last several years now, so this is a biggie for me, but i like the simplistic look of this at this juncture. any thoughts?

I think I like this newer style better. The face still seems to have life to it, even without the huge eyes. Maybe if you give a few more samples with other emotions it'd be easier to know for sure.

I like it, Mario. The faster, looser style works.

...and I'm of the camp that the | eyes work just as well if not better than the ( 0) eyes, particularly with this style. They seem a better fit.

The tricky part is working out how you want to draw shut eyes, or heavily-lidded eyes, or squinty from an onion smell eyes, etc. ...

My only concern is that the new eyes can't convey emotion as well as the bigger eyes. Other than that it looks pretty good.

It's how I've drawn eyes for my whole life, I give it my seal of approval, eyes like that can do a lot more than people give them credit for.

Don't focus on making them perfectly vertical lines though, I've found it looks better if you just do em freehand and they have a little bit of a curve to them, like the rest of the drawing. Solid lines like that seem to not completely fit in with the rest of the picture

Although, I do like the way you draw eyes like in the initial picture in this thread, it never really crossed me as an anime style so much as your own style though.

I agree with these guys. It looks great, but I wonder how it will effect emotions.

That's similar to how I draw eyes on people! Which you might see when I put up my hourly comic.

I'm all for slit-eyes. The thing in my profile picture has eyes similar to that and it is based on a doodle I did many years ago for which I originally came up with the name "X'o'Lore". Ever since that time I have favored the slit-eyedness. However, I was unwilling to impart it upon mere stick people or any other drawing I made for fear my X'o'Lore would become jealous. He was a demanding doodle.

As for the sketchy, I couldn't say whether I like it or not, because I don't know your aim for the story. I can only say that the art begs for proper writing to back it up. It will be required to be funny at least sometimes. And mostly light-hearted. Anything too deep would be hindered by this style.

here's a spread of drawings i made at the same time as the first. i'll try to draw some more this weekend to better develop the style. in order to not give too much away, i'll omit the dialogue (this was actually part of a very rough draft of a potential first episode of the comic) and not explain anything in order to remove all context.

I am all for it, although compared to everything else the eyes in the top two seem to be too thick, I think it's cause they're so straight or something.
  • edited February 2007
well, they were pretty quick and dirty sketchings. i probably intend for the eyes to be thinner in general, more like the bottom-left drawing. i like giving the eyes little curves so they can bend in the direction he's looking. it adds a neat degree of expressiveness.

They look very nice. I'm glad to see you'e working on Devo Revo again!

I really like those samples, especially the one that implies there may be something questionable in his hand.

I declareth that mario shall make this comic, STAT! or i will smite him with my witch powers.

this thread needed an update. it also needed drawings of pokémon. i figured i'd take care of both in one fell swoop!

    20070505-pokesploitation.jpg

a nice little showcasing of the art style (i know people were requesting more varied facial expressions and displays of emotion), and also some pokémon getting abused. enjoy!

Pfft, real exploitation would be using meowth to generate income.

EDIT: Also, isn't it like, really, really late in your neck of the woods right now?

What do the pokeballs do that force the pokemon to obey? I feel kind of sad for them.

The face on the ditto-chair is awesome.

I've been wondering about that too. I mean, it's like first they don't want to be captured, then all of a sudden they love you and will do whatever.

Maybe capturing them is some sort of display of dominance or something.

Also, in the show I think it said that if the Pokeball breaks, the Pokemon becomes free again.
  • edited May 2007
Obviously the pokeballs steal the little critters' souls. With the souls safely trapped in the pokeball, the beasts become like mind-controlled slaves to the owner of the pokeball. It's a bit like summoning demons I'd think.

Then what about Charizard not following Ash's orders?! COME ON THINK ABOUT IT GUYS
  • edited May 2007
Well, Charizard was too high of a level, and Ash clearly didn't have enough badges.
  • godgod
    edited May 2007
Because throughout the entire series, he only uses pokeballs, and great or ultraballs would be better at controlling Charizard. Insert pun about Ash not having enough balls here.
  • edited May 2007
ash wasn't charizard's original trainer, so his obedience is contingent on ash having enough badges to control him. once ash obtained eight gym badges, he would have had enough for pokémon of any level to obey him.

also, I like the soul-stealing pokéball theory.
  • edited May 2007
If they had no soul, how could they dance so well?
  • edited May 2007
The pokeballs probably inject alot of drugs.

It's a scientific fact that drugs are directly related to dancing skillz.
