Half-moving seems more polite than not moving at all. It makes you know that you've been noticed, and that they're trying their best to help you out.

I counter with cynicism! Those people actually hate you and want to be as far away from you as possible.

It can also be chalked up to force of habit. I've noticed that when I hold doors for people, they'll still reach out and brush their fingers against the door, even if I'm firmly holding it.

I concur on the habit front. I agree that it is not really a conscious action. There is also the matter of "personal space" in some of the cases.

Now. How can we break them of this useless habit?

Yeah, I notice that too. Like when I'm holding the door for someone and then I fake slam it shut (take the door and throw it but not actually letting go so I stop it before it hits them), they always flinch. Can't figure it out. :p

Anyway, about the original motion thing, I do that, but only when there are two or more of us waiting to go through a narrow area and nobody wants to be rude and just barge right through.

Maybe every time someone half-moves, we can shoot them. Just spitting out ideas here.

Just scream "Open your own god damned door!" and slam it shut.
