Redundant Virtual Console Redundancy

edited July 18 in Games
I’m sure everyone’s read by now that The Legend of Zelda’s arguably most-loved title in the series, Ocarina of Time, has finally made its way to the Virtual Console...

Can I be the first to say: Who really cares?

They should really start releasing games on VC that didn't get a proper release on consoles, like Terranigma or Seiken Densetsu 3, or maybe games that were released but in such limited quantity that they're impossible to find now and their Ebay prices are just ridiculous, like Ninja Five-O.

Yes! I want a viable competitor to ROM piracy by making every random title from yesterday available at a whim!

    ...I don't pirate ROMs.

    Liar.

Double post weeeee! (sorry I just had to dedicate a post to calling mario a liar. There's no way he bought Rad Gravity.)

But yea, i agree. my first thought when they announced this set up was "hell yea!" and then I remembered that I have gone to great lengths to gather all my favorite NES games and N64 games.

That lead me to another thought: I'm not sure who this is really marketed to. Modern gamer types who don't really have the nostalgia factor I don't think would have much interest. (I can tell you from when I was a counselor at a tech camp those kids didn't get why I liked playing tetris and marble madness more than halo.) People who have that nostalgia or geekitude whatever you wanna call it, likely already have an NES and SNES and N64 and all (or at least most of) the games they'd want for 'em. And as mario points out, they probably already have them on 3 or 4 systems. I still love when they tuck the old school games on newer versions for free, but I don't see myself buying the same games AGAIN just cause they're on a wii.

There are a few N64 games I haven't been able to find, and 4-player just doesn't work as well with only three working controllers anyway.

Our SNES controllers are starting to go as well. Not so much the buttons as the plugs. A lot of them have gotten crushed/ripped apart somehow and no longer hook up to the system. Our only working one doesn't grip the port at all, and the slightest touch is enough to make you spend five minutes trying to hook it in again properly. So yeah, as far as maintenance is concerned, I like Virtual Console.

Now I just need a Wii.

I just want a way of getting a legitimate copy of Ninja Five-O for a reasonable price. That game made even ninjas cool.

Now if they released masters quest on the VC, that I might pick up. I never got the bonus disk with WW despite preordering it. :(

It came packaged with The Wind Waker in Europe. Everyone who bought it got their free disk :D

Even Though I own a copy of Kid Icarus, it takes me like...10 minutes to get it working. Also, I don't like using passwords, so the VC version of Kid Icarus is slighly superior for me.

Indeed, Virtual Console's ability to save your previous position in any game is quite a point in its favor. I just can't see myself paying $5+ for the convenience, unless my original cartridge was, like, damaged beyond use.
  • edited February 2007
Besides, when I already own a legitimate copy of the cartridge I usually consider that to mean I can play the ROM on an emulator guilt-free. There may still be some legal entanglements there (though not as many as Nintendo would like you to think) but as I see it, once you've paid for the game you can do what you want with it.

    Word to that.

Yea, if you're a cheater and lame. If you can't beat the mario games in one sitting, you don't deserve to be playing them. the same applies to almost all the games that didn't allow saving.

Nah, I liken it to leaving your system on overnight. I've done this on several NES games, but it's quite the waste of electricity, versus saving your session and picking up right where you left off.
  • edited February 2007
Exactly, it's a lot more convenient than passwords. Especially the 24-character passwords in Kid Icarus.

Man, how did I miss this thread?

Re: not deserving games, etc. etc.: if I buy a game, then I can do whatever the hell I please with it, which includes cheating. Whatever makes it more fun for me. I understand that the limitations are part of the game design, but I also understand that I don't care.

Yeah. The whole point of buying a game is to have fun. That's why it's called a game!

i recently went into a game crazy with some gift crads burning holes in my wallet. i thought i'd pick up guitar hero 2 if i could afford it, but they were out of the game packaged with a guitar and all they had were wireless guitars, which are more than i was willing to pay.

so i looked around and saw the messiah NEX, and asked the guy working there if he had heard anything about how well it worked or anything (i had read online reviews, but i was still curious).

he said, "why would you buy that? you can get all the old games on the wii now." he gave me a really weird look.

i went on to explain that i had a bunch of NES games already, had no wii, and the 65 dollars for the nex was more in my realm of possibility than the 250 for a system i wouldnt be able to find (i camped out all night to get my sister's; i'm not doing it again).

this post is sort of pointless. sorry; i'ma go play duckhunt on the nex now.
  • edited March 2007
Yeah, that guy's full of nonsense. I think you already have more NES cartridges than they sell via Virtual Console, and a lot of those are more obscure titles that'll never show up on the Wii, or would be impossible to play with any degree of fun (I'm talkin' about that World Class Track Meet of yours, but of course we still need to find you a trackpad).

How's the NEX working out? I too have read online reviews, but I am still curious.

it works great. i want to get a wireless controller, but 50 bucks is a lot for a controller i have 5 of :P... but if i can find the other half of the multi-tap, then at least i could play from a bit father away.

i'm in the middle of a game of vegas dream. it isn't as fun when playing alone...

It's still fun! Get married ten times!

EDIT: Damnit, now that game's song is stuck in my head. The one song. That repeats forever.

i went to a vegas show with a with a woman who was not my wife moments after getting married... they gave me 5,000 dollars for getting married, but then this pink haired hoe stole 1450 of it... i love this game

    Only in Vegas!

    ...Dream.
  • edited March 2007
why did the hotel give me 500 dollars for breaking a five for someone?
  • edited March 2007
Man, I wish the Wii would get Vegas Dream. I'd buy it up right quick. We never did beat that game, did we? Never quite had the patience to gamble our way up to $1,000,000 in one sitting. The Virtual Console quick save feature would be most helpful for a game like that, and all the gambling minigames were solid enough that I think people would still enjoy it today. And there's always the show!

i went peniless and then won 20,000 in the last chance slot... i have been playing this game for almost 2 hours without restarting
  • edited March 2007
You do realize that we'll have to play up some Vegas Dream this weekend. Like, a lot.

I wish I had known people were looking for a Power Pad.

Also, re: the NEX, have you tried Castlevania III? It's supposed to be a problem for that system, and it's very important to me.
  • edited March 2007
Neither of us have a copy of that to try out. You'll have to send me one along with the Power Pad!

Is there any advantage to paying $60 for an NEX rather than going to a flea market and paying $20 for a used NES?
