The Redmond, Wash.-based company is making a pitch to turn its portable DS Lite into a baseball staple, bringing interactive technology to fans through a pilot program being tested this season at the Mariners' Safeco Field.

The innovative program is called the Nintendo Fan Network. For a fee, the network uploads a program onto the user's DS Lite and allows fans to order food and drinks, watch the live television feed of the game, access stats and scores and play trivia, all from the comfort of their seat -- whether it's a premium seat behind home plate or in the top row of the stadium.

"It's been a work in progress. Once we created the technology of the DS, we started looking at other applications to use its wireless features," said Nintendo corporate affairs manager J.C. Smith. "The program system became so popular ... so we sought other ways to make this a fun system for people to have."
Not a big fan of baseball, but that's actually a pretty sweet idea, isn't it?

Oh man, that's awesome. I love going to baseball games and stuff. But why would you need a television feed if you're at the ballpark?

That's pretty cool. On the other hand, I've tried doing things like that (downloading Palm score charts, listening to the radio broadcast), and it ends up distracting you from the game itself. A baseball game is supposed to be sort of a group affair, and unless you either go alone or only bring DS-touting friends, you're kinda alienating yourself being tied down to a DS with headphones.

That video feed might be more useful if you can rewind and replay TiVo-style, in case you miss a play. But I like that Nintendo's thinking outside the box.

I went last weekend and tested it. I'm working on the feature right now. I'll post it here when it's done.

Preview: neat idea for the future, but save your $5.

well, i don't really know for baseball, i'm not much of a fan, but i can tell you at hockey games I often find myself wishing I could hear the commentators when there's a penalty called or a whistle is blown and I didn't see why, I often find myself sitting there going, "What happened?!?!" Not to mention replays of penalties and such can provide valuable insight. plus... ordering food on a DS!!! SWEET! although, i can see some kid ordering like, 20 pepperoni pizzas and 8 large sodas without asking his parents...
