Sunshine
To remind all of you SCIENCE! fans in North America, Sunshine is now out.
I plan to see it tomorrow, and hope to be as blown away as I was by 48 Days Later.
Forsake your little "Harry Potter" films, and see this new movie instead! Or in addition too, preferably!

Ironically, the city that hosts the indie Sundance fest is always late to get the new indie films. Paprika just came out here this week (I'll see it later today), but I've been specifically avoiding the previews of Sunshine because it looked so good....
Not this time, sadly.
I work at a movie theater, which unfortunately rarely plays any indie movies, instead opting for 3 screens of the latest blockbuster film. (Hell, were still playing pirates.) Its so hard for me now to pay for movies at a different theater when I can go see them for free at mine. Even if I wanted to though, this movie isn't out anywhere. So I guess that makes this rant kinda pointles.
They were not.
I'm not sure they're playing this anywhere near me.
It also sucked.
And that kid with the huge fucking nose.
but what if it didn't... (oh, and mario paul and i have seen it far too many times.)
And why, oh why, is Sunshine only playing at the metreon... I hate that place...
EDIT: Thank you demonoid.
I hope a "I liked it!" or a "Meh, it was alright I guess" will be good enough. I don't do reviews very often, and would probably say something really innacurate if I ever tried.
I gives it a thumbs up. The shitty-slasher-flick part was not so bad! It wasn't so much of "omg I'm gonna stab everyone ahhhhh" as it was a "holy crap I hope he doesn't stab that guy, cuz that would be unfortunate for the rest of the plot line."
Well, what can I say, it's gorgeous. This is the first movie in a long time that I couldn't find a theater, so I downloaded, watcherd it, and now REALLY want to see it in a theater. The imagery is just amazing, and light is a huge part of the movie (as the title suggests.) I can only imagine that this movie on film would make an art of playing with light that is hard to match.
Yes, the movie's plot changes dramatically, as the trailer suggests, but this helps the film avoid becoming another Armageddon / Volcano / Dante's Peak. It has the whole "the world is coming to an end and they're facing challenges to save it" generic premise, but that is not the plot. The plot is about the people and how they cope with what they're doing and the psychological burdens they face. Yes, the villain can feel a little out of place at times, but the film doesn't suffer much because of it. Definitely worth watching, and definitely worth seeing in a theater. Who would've guessed that someone could make the natural disaster / apocalypse type movies actually be thoughtful and artistic? Well, Danny Boyle said to that question "But... what if we could? ..."
