I don't think they are really there so much as projecting their essenses. Like when they create the bridge for Link. Even now, Saria is probably not physically there, even though she is able to interact with her environment.

But the dot was always so much larger when it was pizza. this tiny dot can't possibly be pizza. If it is, it's hardly worth the effort. I won't even get back the calories expended trying to retrieve the tiny pizza dot. It will be a net loss.
