I welcome Old Man Winter

edited December 2007 in General
I figured, for us in the Northern Hemisphere, winter is coming upon us. This thread is dedicated to just that, winter. To start it off, lets all get pissed off at Travis Rice for jumping Chad's Gap.

Here is another one, and I give full compliments to Geoff for this video. In it you will see Geoff, me, and other people with a season of fun. And make sure to watch it till the end. Can't tell you what it is, but I lose part of my dignity there.

I know what it is. ^_^

Oh, and by the way californians, I'm hoping that our winter will really kick up this weekend. Boreal opened today, and mammoth last week, both largely with artificial snow. There's supposed to be a storm blowing towards us from the north (which means it'll be colder, hopefully) and she's a decent sized one, so CROSS YER FINGERS FER LOTS OF SNOW!!!

It's sunny and happy here in Michigan, last year winter was full of crap.

I have the feeling we're going to have another slushy, nasty, mild winter, with more sleet and freezing rain than fluffy white snow.

I'm thinking it'll be much the same here. It used to be we could expect a significant amount of snow by Thanksgiving. In recent years we've been lucky to have proper snow by Christmas.

It's been getting colder and colder, but today randomly decided to be in the mid 70's for some reason.

    THIS. IS. BRITAIN!

We have cold winters but snow very rarely down in the south. :(

It's gonna be 12 degrees tomorrow but with pretty bad wind chill...

I dedicate this, one of my favorite poems, to this year's winter. I absolutely love winter. It's peaceful and relaxing. It's great to be outside, soaking in the cold, and it's even better to go inside and get warm in front of a fire or snuggle with someone close to you. May this winter be chilly outside so we are always reminded of how warm it can be inside.

"The Snow Man" by Wallace Stevens

One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
    Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;

And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter

Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves,

Which is the sound of the land
    Full of the same wind
That is blowing in the same bare place

For the listener, who listens in the snow,
    And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.

Rochester's been warm these past few days. It's freaking me out. The Rochester gods must be planning the snowstorm of the century...

I WONDER IF THEY COULD FIND A WAY TO MAKE SKIS THAT WORKED AS BOTH DOWNHILL SKIS AND WATERSKIS. THAT WAY PEOPLE COULD SKI DOWN A HILL TOWARD THE WATER, HIT A JUMP, GRAB A ROPE BEING TRAILED BY A PASSING BOAT AND THEN START WATERSKIING. THAT WOULD BE PRETTY COOL.

WELL BAREFOOT WATER SKIING EXISTS. IF SOMEONE COULD DITCH THEIR SKIS AND BOOTS DURING THE JUMP IT'D BE POSSIBLE.

Let me tell you of The most lamentable tragedy of myself walking home yesterday.

I had just left school and departed on my 2.5 mile journey home. On a mild summer day this trek is most enjoyable as I walk along a path flanked on both sides by lovely horse chestnut trees. Truly a picturesque and most pleasurable walk home.

Yesterday however was a different picture. It is almost winter and as such the trees were bare. As soon as I started to walk down the path it began to rain in such a foul manner. Ice cold biting rain which soaks you to the skin in seconds and makes your skin physically tighten so that when you move any of your facial features you can feel them fight against the tightness.

I was forced to trek through this accursed rain with nary a coat upon my person save for a blazer which soaked up the rain with greater efficiency than any sponge. Not only was I soaked and shivering, I was also hindered by steamed up spectacles. Wiping them was an ultimately futile act as the rain continued its relentless onslaught.

I finally reached home and was able to remove my sodden garments and wrap up in the finest warm clothes and relax with a good book after hanging my blazer to dry on the radiator.

    Epilogue:
And that my humble readers was my journey. Despite everything it has the most wonderful of endings. This morning I woke up and got dressed. Just as I left the house I picked up my blazer from the radiator and found it to be blissfully warm for my drier, albeit still quite chilly trek to school. And wonders of wonders, today was a good day.

The tale is doon and God save al the rowte!

Well We have only gotten some snow today but they’ve gotten about 10 inches of snow up in the mountains (yaaaa only 2 more inches needed for them to open) So I hope they open up this weekend.

P.S. Where Did you get the pig outfit???

You should get one of those little collapsible umbrellas. I keep one in the backpack I take with me pretty much whenever I leave the apartment, and it's come in handy quite a few times.

It is snowy here! It's actually not that bad, and I really do hope that winter isn't slushy and crappy like it was last year.

I even took a walk in the snow yesterday.

We got snow too, but not much. The annual Thanksgiving huge-ass fire was enjoyable with a bit of white to reflect the bright orange glow.
