The New and Improved SCIENCE! Movie thread

edited January 2009 in Movies and Shows
Right folks, I'm looking to restart the SCIENCE! movie watching mid-April, possibly the start of May.

To that end we're taking suggestions for movies again.

Currently City of Lost Children, Bubba Ho-Tep, Return of the Living Dead, Santa's Slay, Jack Frost, Tron, Little Shop of Horrors, Re-Animator, Westworld, Undead, Riki-Oh, Reign of Fire, Planet of the Apes, Andromeda Strain, Lost Skeleton of Cadavra, The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Protector, Jurassic Park and Labyrinth will be slotted back into the rotation, because they got missed out on in the first time round and are really worth seeing.

If you're looking for animated movies, both Treasure Planet and Atlantis: The Lost Empire are excellent.

Has The Core been a SCIENCE! movie yet? If not, it needs to be now. Also, since a lot of people haven't seen it, and despite how boring it gets, everyone needs to see Citizen Kane at some point in their lives.

I suggest Paprika. It has headbands that let you see into dreams.

As great as people usually think Citizen Kane is, it's not very SCIENCE!y. But yeah, people should see it independent of the SCIENCE! Movie group.

Santa's Slay will be an annual Christmas flick.

I second The Core, throw in Predator, and request more theater-going discussions like we did for Snakes On A Plane. Meet Dave is coming out this summer, and I intend to give it a watchin'. I should warn you that Eddie Murphy will be in this movie, but Bill Corbett from Mystery Science Theater 3000 wrote the story, so it has somewhat of a chance of not sucking hard.

Even if the risks are too great for most of you in the case of Eddie Murphy, I'd still like to have once-a-month-or-less theatrical SCIENCE! movies. We can go with more mainstream if you'd prefer, but it's important to stay current with the latest SCIENCE! happenings.

I was reading through the old thread, and a bunch of movies were suggested that never got added to the list.

So Returner, Equilibrium and Versus are going on there. As are Hammy's suggestions. Highlander - also accepted. I have never even heard of Paprika I'll try and look it up tomorrow and give you an answer. Any comments from other people that have seen it would be appreciated. Also adding The Birds. I can't believe I didn't think of that the first time round.

Citizen Kane? I'm going to say no.

    Yays:
Pitch Black & Chronicles of Riddick.
    Sunshine
Cube. We'll see about the others.
28 days later (although, Geoko, it's not actually a zombie movie)
Dawn of the Dead remake, 'cos we've done the original already.

    Nays: All the rest

May I ask why Snakes on a Plane doesn't count?
  • edited March 2008
It's already been done and there's already been discussion.
  • edited March 2008
So it has. I withdraw my previous suggestion.

28 Days Later is zombie enough for fans of the genre to appreciate it. I'll keep calling it a zombie movie.

Please also add Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Be Kind Rewind whenever it's out on DVD.

My bad. it's not a zombie movie in that the dead did not rise. On the other hand, it is a zombie movie in that by being bitten, you turn into one, those who have the disease have an overwhelming hunger for human flesh, it's shot and edited within the normal conventions of the style of traditional zombie films, the "diseased" are normally followed by the sound of flies implying that they are dead... you're right, i was way off. :P I mean come on, it's a zombie movie, the only difference is that it tried to have a viable scientific explanation... and the zombies can run. :)

Oh oh, and one more zombie movie to add - Shawn of the Dead.

    1 Million Years BC?

Also, was Return of the Living Dead done in the original thread? 'Cause it's a pretty awesome zombie movie.

Jon mentioned it in the very first post with this thread.

1 Million Years B.C. had dinosaurs, whereas 10,000 B.C. did not, so at least the newer film is slightly more accurate historical fiction. Except that there were no cities until around 4,000 B.C.

nor the pyramids or the bronze or iron age, the bronze age didn't even start till around 3000 bc, but they had both those byproducts. 10,000 was the the stone age. Also, the pyramids were built starting around 2650 bc. They were only arond 7250 years off in the movie. I guess I can say that the pyramids in Egypt are being built right now. It would be more accurate than the movie. :p And people mysteriously spoke English all over the places they traveled (though I guess I can forgive that because this is an American movie). And what I just said is the extreme tip of this shitty iceberg. I believe that this will hold up to be the worst movie of the year.

    Ranting complete.

I still want it to be a SCIENCE! Movie though, once it's out on DVD. I'd like to see just how damn bad it really is.

That might be something that you will regret. Reference my previous post.

One Million Years B.C. also had Raquel Welsh in a fur bikini, and if it weren't for Raquel Welsh in a fur bikini Andy Dufresne would be stuck in prison to this day.

They aren't zombies because of motivation. The infected in 28 days later didn't eat people. They would bite, because when you're batshit crazy, you'll bite, kick, punch, elbow, knee and headbutt at topspeed and as much as possible to kill your foe.

Once again, they certainly didn't eat anyone, because that was the whole point of 28 days later. 28 days later the infected starved to death because they were too busy, running around trying to destroy everything, to eat.

So, different reasons, different actions and only a similar infection method. You could get it from saliva in bites, but you could also get the rage virus by getting the blood in you. Be it from spatter into the eyes/mouth or directly into the bloodstream via an open wound.

So no, not a zombie movie. A fucking awesome movie, but not a zombie movie.

Also: Please don't recommend things until they actually come out on DVD. Sure, make a discussion thread in this forum for cinema movies if you really want (I'm not averse to the occasional 'gen disc' fodder taking up residence here), but I don't feel the need to add intangibles to a list that has literally hundreds of already valid options.

Shaun of the Dead has already been watched and discussed.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind = Yay.
