Peeves...

edited June 2008 in General
I was curious about what people hate (I.E. pet peeves).

Mine are people who question people about their pet peeves while telling others their own.

Oh... and people who people who spell "were" as in "We were going." with an "h", "We where going."

Rrrrrr.

I hate completely inane threads that contradict themselves (OR DO I?!)

Most widely-occurring spelling and speech errors get to me, though I usually resist the urge to say anything.

This sudden lack of gaming time in my life also gets to me...

The word "opinion" as it's commonly used in debates, such as trying to dismiss someone's argument by saying "that's just your opinion" or avoid criticism by prefacing a statement with "in my opinion." The fact of the matter is, a statement can either be subjective or objective; if it's subjective then it's all opinion no matter what, and if it's objective then it cannot simply be an opinion and you have to be prepared to back it up if you're challenged on it.

Also, when people say "begs the question" when they really mean "raises the question." "Begging the question" is a term for a logical fallacy although it's almost never used in its correct context any more.

    I hate the word blog.

I have way too many peeves. I tried to list them once. I don't feel like looking for that now.

I usually don't like it when people constantly change their mind about things that don't matter. I also don't like it when people type out the word "your" when they mean "you're." Such as saying "Your welcome."

But in both cases I rarely say anything about it. The 'your' problem is so common, I would go crazy if I got that upset every time I saw it!

I'm anal about grammar and spelling. Far too anal, really. To the point where if I see something with lots of spelling/grammar mistakes, I start involuntarily grinding my teeth.

That, and the fact that I hate children is why I can never be a teacher.

Right now I am imagining you as a teacher. A child goes over to you. He/she turns in a paper. You glare at him while your teeth take punishment. *BLAMMO* Never before has child abuse been so educational.

I hate when people use the word "literally" as an intensifier.
  • edited May 2008
    Literally?

the loose/lose thing angers me. It seems like on the internet everybody always uses "loose" no matter what, but they always mean "lose". It's one thing if it happens now and then but I think it's actually been well over a year since I've actually seen somebody correctly say "lose". It happens every time without fail. Even with the people on this forum! For shame!

Also, while I'm at it, I hate people who put the starting curly brace on the same line as a control statement. It should always go on its own line.

Oh, and also "of". "I would of", "I could of". Argh, infuriating!
  • edited May 2008
In my opinion, this thread begs the question: "Where someone to literally write a post on their blog about pet peeves, would they of been a looser?" I think yes. Actually, I change my mind. Your welcome.

Even though I know it's satirical, your post has caused my blood pressure to rise a few points. Curse you.
  • edited May 2008
Then clearly I was doing it correctly!
  • edited May 2008
Augh, Mario, why did you have to go and do a thing like that?
  • edited May 2008
At first I didn't think I'd be able to do something like that, but then I asked myself "What if I could?" You know the rest.
  • edited May 2008
Hm...I can't stand when someone punches me in the face.
  • edited May 2008
I agree, being punched in the face is not exactly pleasant.
  • edited May 2008
This happens frequently enough to become a pet peeve?

    DOUBLE POST OF

I remembered one! I absolutely loathe it when people double click on links.
  • edited May 2008
    My pet peeve is double-posting.
  • edited May 2008
    Sorry.
  • edited May 2008
    I won't do it again.
  • edited May 2008
    Triple Posting is worse...
  • edited May 2008
I didn't realize we were ranking our pet peeves.

Also, I don't actually care much about double-posting. I just like order, and dislike disorder.
  • edited May 2008
Do you know who else liked order and disliked disorder? Hitler.

Also, another one of my pet peeves is Godwin's Law.
  • edited May 2008
One of my pet peeves is when people just yell over the top of me to win an argument. Never mind the fact that I have valid points, you can yell loud, so you must be correct!

I hate people who try to be funny through "amusing" uses of hypocrisy.
  • edited May 2008
An actual pet peeve of mine is when something is misidentified as irony.
