Final Fantasy IV Remake for DS!

edited July 2008 in Games
Finally, a good DS game, after all these months. I apparently comes out next month. FF IV's one of the few FFs I've played, and it's really awesome! The remake looks pretty awesome with the CG cutscenes and whatnot. Also, they're including story segments that haven't been seen in the western world yet. I'm super pumped.

    FF is boring.

You could mimic 99% of the gameplay by fiddling with an excel chart.

Yeah, I've known about this remake since sometime last year.

I'll probably pick it up. IV is my favorite in the series and I want to see what they've done with it his time.

Those are some impressive cutscenes for the DS!

I've never been big on RPG's. Never got past the first disk in FF7, never even got my lightsaber in KOTOR, which is supposed to be one of the best Western RPG's. I just get bored with them too quick. The only one's I've beaten are the two Kingdom Hearts games.

    What about the Zelda games?

    :objection:

Final Fantasy games are among my favorites. I know there's a lot of numbers involved, but I think of it kinda like D&D. Besides, the storylines can be amazing; I am continually blown away by FFVI's storyline, and the collection aspect of every game gives me hours of enjoyment. I think of RPGs almost like stamp collecting, but way more awesome. These games have all kinds of stuff you can discover, you just have to look hard enough.

But of course, not everyone can get into games like that, because the pace is a bit slower. But to each his or her own.

FF games these days are like interactive 3D anime movies. At least that's how they always come off to me. I liked all the old FF games (1-6) that I played, but VII was too much of a departure for me. I just couldn't get into Final Fantasy after that.

This makes me consider going back and playing IV again. I played I,III,V, and VI plenty of times each, but II and IV I never gave more than a once through for whatever reason.

Don't forget Mystic Quest! I enjoyed it.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2 is out. I'm much more excited about that.

I am the only person I know who absolutely hated Tactics Advance. I have always been a diehard Tactics fan, but I just couldn't make myself play TA. The judges, the watered down battle system, ugh. Although, I know I am in the far minority on this one.

FFIV, though, I have played several times and enjoyed. Cecil is badass.

However, I'm a little concerned about how they will remake this game. You see, most gamers these days are goddamn whiners, and they don't like a challenge. Many of the old remakes have been easily beaten with minimal to no additional leveling outside of the story. Now, I could go on an old man rant about spending hours leveling up against big green giants outside Elfland in Final Fantasy I, but my bones are achin'.

I'd like it to be at least a little hard. But, seeing as how their other games have been lately, it probably won't be...

Yeah, I played the GBA version of FFI and my head almost exploded from the massive amount of MP they gave mages early on in the game. And they took away the badass Black Wizard sprite and made it totally gay... *sigh*

I remember trying Tactics Advance and kinda not liking it, so you might not be the only one. But I should probably give it another go. I do rather enjoy Tactics.

In a Nintendo Power Interveiw, the creater himself actually said it would remain as challenging as the SNES one, and he said he knew that his recent games ahave been too easy. So that won't be an issue.

I think I may get it... like the Wii, I always jump at the opportunity for something to give it some use. And I do love FFIV.

    *sigh*

I never considered them RPG's. Yes technically I suppose you play the role of Link and it is a game, but RPG to me brings to mind stats based combat with some form of leveling system and an endless grind to kill enemies to make your character stronger.

I came in late on the gaming scene, so I've never played any FF games before FFVI besides FFI.

Or about how you have to spend twice as much time just to get the gold for one spell (out of six if you have 2 spell casters) at the 5th spell level. And then they dont even tell you what the spell does.

I didn't like FFTA either. I don't like levelling systems that make you equip items to gain new skills.

Well, actually, FF9 used the system well, but I just didn't like it on the GBA.

Perhaps I will pick it up this August during my next trip back home to the land of freedom.

    Land of Freedom? Where?

    Scotland?

Anyone have a suggestion for another good tactics game not unlike FFTA?

I never tried FFTA and im about to get the ROM for it, but any ideas for a real (Physical) game?
  • edited June 2008
The actual FFTA cartridge. It's a wonderful turn-based strategy game! But if you want something simpler, Advance Wars and Fire Emblem are good fun.

I played and really liked AW, and ive been tipped to FE for a while but i heard it gets hella hard. I mean, i like a challenge, especially with tactical-type Turn based games, but if its like Battletoads hard? kthxbai.

    Disgaea.

It's a wonderfully open SRPG with a prominent humorous side. You can do almost anything with your characters, the level cap is INSANELY high... it's all about having fun. I recently introduced Ryan (Serephel) to the PSP version (which is the original plus extra stuff), so he can attest to its greatness.

I'm not sure how it measures up to FFTA, because I've never played it, but it's fun.

What can i get it for other than PSP? Because i was never a fan of Sony's newest handheld abortion.

Tactics Ogre: Knight of Lodis is pretty awesome, although hard to find these days without an eyepatch and pegleg.

    I have my sources :D

Disgaea was on PS2 before PSP. Those guys made several games of similar gameplay and art style, though their names currently escape me. Paul's a big fan of those games, but they're kind of ridiculous in terms of gameplay complexity. Still awesome though.

The original is on PS2, though I'm not sure how easy it's going to be to find, or how expensive.

The sequel is easy to find, and the gameplay is identical except for a few things they've fixed up here and there. The story is nearly disposable in the first game (I think, others may disagree) so if you just want an SRPG with endless character customization and a lot of fun ways to grow, you could pick up the second one just fine. Just read a plot synopsis of the first.

EDIT: Nippon Ichi is what you're thinking of, Mario. The publisher is Atlus, another company I am fond of.

Thanks guys, i just got a PC copy of FFTA (hehe) Ill tell you how my experience goes soon :D
  • edited June 2008
Ah yes, Nippon Ichi. La Pucelle and Phantom Brave were the other titles I was thinking of. All fine tactical RPGs.
