LaVeyan Satanism

edited July 2008 in General
Wherein Panda tells us as much about LaVeyan Satanism as she possibly can.

First HE will start with a brief history of Satanism en generale, followed by a history of Anton LaVey and why he thought his brand was better. The meat of the lesson will be filled with information about The Church today including, but not limited to:
  • Their hierarchal structure
  • Geopolitical distribution, along with percentage of population
  • Political involvement, if any
  • Prominent LaVeyan Satanists
  • Stated objectives of The Church
  • Panda's personal experiences
  • The Church in the future
Each bulleted item constitutes a lesson and will be cut up into one post a piece. All topics may not be covered, but I encourage them to be. Discussion will follow each lesson (AKA post) until Panda posts a new lesson. For reasons of expediency discussion on each lesson will end when the new lesson begins. Discussion of the entire course may begin once Panda says the course is over.

I could have looked up all this junk on some alt.yahoo bullshit, I'm sure, but I prefer to hear it from the horse's mouth. Plus, Panda, you'll become more informed on the aspects of your religion that you were rusty on.

WTF? What happened to all our religious based tom foolery?

    ummm.... god?

EDIT: speaking of which, whatever happened to god? haven't seen him on here in a while.

I believe the Filleau-man deleted it in an effort to stop being really off-topic and to get the topic going at all.

But I liked eating pancakes! Oh well, it was John's thread, he can do with it as he likes. Since I have nothing useful to contribute to discussion on LaVeyan Satanism, I'll stop chit-chatting in this thread, but I would suggest restoring Jakey's posts on the matter, which I found particularly enlightening. In fact, with Jakey's permission, I'd be glad to bring them back myself.

You can delete your own threads? I've never tried.

    Haruhi wished for it...

I can only assume you mean me, and I've been around. just a bit more lurkey than I used to be.

And yes, Nuki, it was because of Haruhi-Sama.

Also, and I'm just my expressing my opinion of a philosophical system and not of any of its adherents, LaVeyan Satanism is bullshit and basically a LARP game for pretentious atheist philosophers. The underlying tenets aren't really objectionable to me (and have really nothing to do with Satan at all, even on a metaphorical level -- existentialism and secular humanism could fit the bill just as nicely) but the intentionally confrontational attitude and self-righteous condescension toward actual religious beliefs make it a petty, immature and negatively-defined group of loudmouthed malcontents who contribute nothing. Also, many LaVeyan Satanists are Randian Objectivists, which further enhances the imperious self important ham fisted internet jerk image that they have created for themselves.

John never corrected Panda's gender reference.

Clearly John is a man of conviction! He sticks to his guns!

Clearly John is a man who forgets things if he doesn't write them down! Thanks for restating your post, Jake. Panda, please enlighten us. Seriously.

That's only half of the incorrect pronouns in your post, John...

    Wow I'm dumb. -_-;;;

We'll keep the other one up for posterity, no?

    No.

Yes. Just to be contradictory. :takethat:

EDIT: By the way, John, when's the next wipe?

Heyyyy, no fair! You're supposed to be telling us about LaVeyan Satanism!!
  • edited July 2008
    Uhh, Lemme see:

Well what's wrong with pancakes, pancakes are desirable and, as per the teachings of Anton LaVey, we are to enjoy said desires in this life and as frequently as possible.

    How's that?
  • edited July 2008
    No, because that's hedonism.
  • edited July 2008
    No, because that's Epicureanism.

What is this jibber-jabber of which you speak?
  • edited July 2008
Oh, I changed it, it was wrong. Epicureanism is slightly different, a philosophy that states that religion isn't necessary, but that you should modestly pursue a pleasurable life by indulging neither too much or too little.

Hedonism being the pursuit of pleasure above all else.

As I've read, LaVeyan Satanism is a religion created in opposition to Christianity. It states that there is great power within humans, and it is a LaVeyan Satanist's call to use that power to the fullest personal gain. Swift retribution to those who oppose you and a disregard for the weak also are important tenets of this religion.

Kinda like humanism, but much more vindictive and self-oriented.

You're right about that, although the main creation of this religion was so that man could release and pursue his carnal desires without the fear of 'Jesus' almighty retribution' and so on and so forth. Whereas you are correct about how to treat the weaker of the population, the main focus is on your own desires.

Yay! Now we're getting somewhere! :D

Okay, my question for you, then, is this... can't you accomplish the same thing by just rejecting Christianity? You don't necessarily have to go the extra distance and subscribe to this particular philosophy. Is there anything else besides escaping Jesus' retribution that you find appealing?

Yay! Now we're getting somewhere! :D

    Ahh you tricky bastard.

Lessee...Rejecting Christianity with accepting Satanism is like becoming a PETA activist without telling people not to eat meat or sending them brochures that say 'your fisherman daddy is a MURDERER' no srsly. It's not so much that I reject Christianity it's more that it does nothing for me faithfully. Not to sound cocky or that i'm better than anyone else (because I know i'm not, i'm not perfect), but the cardinal sin of satanists is stupidity. Pure and simple, for having a lack of common sense is a sin, and I fully believe in that. And what is faith but believing in something that not many others believe in or can prove?
  • edited July 2008
If I may interject and say I find all religion stupid. Faith and worship are personal things. Why should we have to be told that we must worship God on a sunday by going to a church and praying and singing songs?

Worship God/Life/Whatever you believe in in your own way, don't let people tell you how to....
  • edited July 2008
Well, religion can be very comforting. I used to be very religious when I was growing up, but due to a series of personal events I lost my faith. Saw some things, how could God let this happen, blah blah blah. It was real to me, and I couldn't hold onto any faith. It wasn't a conscious decision. I tried to hold on to it, but going to church didn't do anything for me after that.

It's liberating and condemning at the same time. I get to sleep in on Sundays, and I don't constantly worry about the little things that Christians worry about. I don't worry if I did something to anger God, or if I need to constantly live better. I'm pretty content with how I am right now.

The natural counterargument to that is what about my morals. Morals come from within, what you naturally feel is right and wrong. These are often brought up by family, society, and oftentimes religion, but not always. Most importantly, they are subjective. In some parts of the world, it is morally imperative that you murder your own daughter if she has slept with a man before marriage. I certainly don't agree with that, but point is it happens. My morals keep me walking a fine line of life enjoyment, and as long as my enjoyment doesn't hurt others, that's fine.

But, the condemnation I referred to would be the belief that I'm just going to disappear when I die. And that's a scary fucking thought. I was much happier when I believed I would go to Heaven.

Even so, that can be a good motivator. Believing that you only have a good 40-50 years max to be active forces you to make the most out of your time. That's why I packed up and moved 7,000 miles away from everyone I knew and loved after college. Go out and see the world, because if I don't do it now, I might never have the chance.

But, religion makes people feel nice. If it helps them bring order and calm to the world, let it be.

But when they piss away my home country's government's time on nonissues like gay marriage and intelligent design, then I get frustrated, because I'm fairly sure there are more important things to deal with.

SO THEN, going back to Satanism Panda, how do you all view afterlife?
