So I finally got my undergraduate about three weeks ago, which is awesome. I'm the first one in my family to do so, so it's kind of a big deal. My gf and I went up to Pittsburgh to find a house two weeks ago, found one, and now we're starting a leisurely packing pace. Honestly, though, I have so much free time now. It's confusing. I don't know what to DO with myself. I've been reading, exercising, doing yard work, and hanging out with friends - all things I was unable to do before graduation, but I STILL have too much free time.
What do you people DO with yourselves?
Congrats to Lauren who has probably graduated by now, herself!
Kill time checking mspaintadventures for updates...wait, no. Don't do that. That'd be kinda boring and pointless right now.
Statistically analyze the percentages of new art submissions on deviantart related to various fandoms/themes. Well, that's actually kinda weird I guess, but it's probably better than "shipping" fandoms?
You know what? Just don't internet. Except for the OB and like your email I guess. Those are probably ok.
John, this is a legit question!!! I too find myself with a lot of free time... although my new kick-ass job allows me to come in at 10am (or, you know, whenever) so I find myself working until 6 or 7. Right now I'm playing video games I haven't had time to play, plus drinking and watching movies. Makes me anxious though, I feel like I should be more productive in my evenings! I've seriously considered picking up my violin again (more than once a month that is) and seeing if I can find either a folksy artsy band to jam with, or go back into classical music and figure out a quartet that would play gigs with me.
Not going to lie, I'm soaking in the new-found "I have two undergrad university degrees and I won't have classes starting up again unless I want them to" feeling.
NO MORE THEORY MATH CLASSES! AHAHAHHAHAA, IT'S WONDERFUL!
I'm with Lauren on this. After working through college, only having to deal with the work part of the day really affords me a lot of unexpected free time.
Now I just need to learn to cherish these days before I have kids.
John, I'll finally answer your question! I'm currently working at this pretty sweet place in downtown Austin, I recently posted their mock 'recruiting video' on my facebook page that's pretty funny if anyone is facebook friends with me and wants to check it out. It's a storage aggregator site-- meaning, if you google 'storage units' looking for a place to put your shit, there's a good chance (hopefully!!) that our site will pop up with suggestions for storage units in your area. Kind of a weird little industry, but hey, creating new industries via the interwebs turns out to be pretty goddamn profitable. I work as a Data Analyst, so I look at a fuckton of data we pull from visitors on the site and figure out how we can make more money off of it, via digging through our massive database. Super satisfying job (and extremely interesting!), although I'm still learning quite a bit of it. I'm currently an intern, but hopefully I'll score a full time offer pretty soon here. I've already been asked what my expected starting salary would be, soooo things are looking good!! The whole company is anti-corporate bullshit, so I doubt they would get my hopes up just to shatter my dreams. Still waiting for that confirmation offer though. It's seriously an AMAZING job...
Last Friday, we had our annual boat party-- 3 party barges, 2 jet skis, and 4 ski boats for like 5 hours with everyone else in the company getting drunk. This company loves getting drunk. Sounds like the perfect job for me, right??? They host themed happy hours in the office every two weeks, and have a bunch of other parties for no good reason other to get drunk with coworkers. Like... really drunk. Even with downtown parking being a drag, the company pays for you to park your car overnight, AND they pay for a cab voucher to take you home AND back to your car the next day (assuming you're not too hungover to make it there). The bar in the kitchen is always fully stocked with liquor and beer, and we have a CHEF that makes supremely delicious lunch for us (for free) every day. It's... too amazing. I was extremely lucky to get an internship at this competitive company, and I'm loving every second of it.

Seriously hope everyone else is doing pretty well, otherwise I'd look like a huge jackass right now.
I'm doing well, yes. I think I got a mild concussion today getting into my car. Aside from that I'm cool though. My planned trip to Vegas got postponed until at least January, so I'm looking for something to do for a summer vacation with all this PTO I have saved up at work.
Lauren, that's ridiculous and awesome. Tak, why the concussion?
I'm in Pittsburgh (again), but this time I'm not working three jobs and 19 years old. Now I'm 28 and going to get my PhD at CMU. That's crazy - can't believe I got in here. Going to add some super obscure knowledge to academia, then probably do... I don't know. Something?
I hit the side of my head on my door getting into my car. Very stupid, I know. I'm not dizzy and my head doesn't hurt anymore, so I don't think it was a concussion to begin with. Good luck at CMU!
I'm in Virginia this week on my first ever business trip! So that's a cool achievement.
I also went to Chicago this weekend and saw Twisted, StarKid's latest musical. I figured I should see them live at least once. You guys are going to love this show once it makes its way to YouTube.
Sadly, though I did message Jake briefly, we weren't able to meet up. He continues to elude me, but I shall persevere. WE SHALL MEET ONE DAY.
I guess this would be as good a place to post as any!
Hello again, everyone. I think the last time I posted something here was back in 2011. It was a rough 2 years. Not on a global scale, since we were comfortable and well-off, but those were my 2 years of working retail after grad school.
I think I got a bit depressed because I realized I couldn't make a living off of my teaching and stay where I was. I knew that to find a full-time job, I'd probably have to look nationally, but Megan had just started her Library Science degree, and we had friends in our area, and she had a really good job, so I hunkered down and just took it... taught full-time at Staples for 2 years and taught part time each fall and spring semester.
Well, last May, Megan graduated from her program. Her internship had dried up, so I figured "why not try my hand at nationwide job hunting?" Megan encouraged it so off I went! Over the course of a few weeks I put out applications for full-time permanent positions across the country. I applied to a total of 54 schools. My work done, I sat down and waited.
Almost immediately I got an interview with a school in Kansas. I was pretty excited, until I saw that it was in the middle of NOWHERE and didn't pay too well.. only 35K or so. And Megan would have had no job opportunities whatsoever. I did well on the interview, I think, but I kind of told them I probably wouldn't be there forever if they hired me since we could barely pay our bills.
So they never called back. Which was fine. A few weeks later, I got a call from a school in New Jersey. Hooray! I had 2 interviews with them, but they were located in a TERRIBLE city (think Detroit) and it would have been teaching developmental writing and reading, something I had no desire to do. The day after my first interview, I got an interview with a school in Hawaii!
Now that was exciting. Sadly, they didn't offer, but the head of the committee told me he was very impressed with me. After that I got interviews in a school in Wisconsin and one in Indiana.
After all the interviews were done, the school in Wisconsin offered a VERY nice package, great benefits, and I would get to teach literature and NO developmental. I was quite stoked.
So now, here I am. Megan and I moved to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin two weeks ago. I've been at my job for little under 2 weeks and it's going great. The semester starts next Monday... my first semester as a full-time permanent instructor for a technical college in Wisconsin. This essentially is a lifetime career job. Unless I muck it up, I can stay here until retirement (and I have loads of programs that can help me build for retirement). So... life is pretty good.
Be sure to stick around and tell us how it all goes.
What's Wisconsin like? I'm vaguely convinced they have a lot of cows there... I think that's the extent of information gleaned from too much American TV.
Thanks! I will do my best. Life is a bit more stable now... I don't have to work weekends anymore, so I should have more time for routine.
And Wisconsin is indeed known for its cows... cheese in particular. Though we're sort of in the west-central part of the state and here there's a lot of forests, state parks, and lakes. It's very beautiful, natural country with a lot of outdoorsy stuff to do in the summer. We're in a very nice smaller city with a lot of bike trails and hiking. Many locals swim and drift in tubes down the local river.
BTW, Adam, I don't hate you guys in regards to LotRO. I just... needed to play other games. I'm a serial game-player-and-noncompletist. I don't remember the last time I fully beat a game.
I can't remember the last time I didn't absolutely 100% complete a game and then do a little more. 100% is all fine and dandy. But what about 99 of every item too?
