    They are discussing the difference between analog and digital sound. Try to keep up?

    Really, it's like if you were going to graph the sound wave of a digital and analog source, the digital would just be a series of points. The analog would be an actual continuous line. You could connect the dots in the digital, but the dots would be connected in an orthographic fashion, as in at 90 degree anlges, which produces the steps that geoko was talking about.
    Is that a more cryptic way to explain it? :)
    If you want a simpler explaination I'd be tempted to break out some crayons and draw you a picture. I'm not a very good teacher.
