Minecraft!

edited July 2012 in Games
Well, I was really digging the discussion regarding Minecraft and thought we'd be able to mine a lot more information out of each others' brains by having everything in one thread rather than having to creep in another thread.

Mario and I mucked about on the server he setup, and it ran pretty damn well, so hopefully it'll run well enough for the minecrafters of the forum to play about.

The server address is 71.202.246.193. Mario and I built a nice little pad to the north east of the spawn point. You'll recognise it from a distance by the big flaming obelisk on the roof and the door. I haven't got round to it, but I will make a path leading straight from the spawn point to the pad to make it easier for everyone.

I'm going to do single player for a bit until I get the hang of it, then I'll join you. I had to look up how to craft a pickaxe, but now that I understand how one thing is made I'm going to try and figure out some other stuff. I'm pretty amazed at how far advanced beta is from classic.

EDIT: I jumped on the server and.... it seems to have some issues. Most of the world doesn't load and most of the time I just fall through empty sky when I log in. Is this something on Minecraft's end or my end? I've heard the multiplayer can be laggy...

Running some software updates on my computer, gonna see if that helps improve performance. It ran really smoothly when Bruce was connected and I KNOW there's gotta be some ping delay happening there, so there could be something amiss with your connection if you're getting that much lag. The server should be back up in a few minutes, we'll see how it works then.

I'd love to get something running on The Orange Belt's Dreamhost server, if my computer doesn't work out I'll look into that a little more.

I tried logging into some other random server I found and I'm having the same issue there, so it must be something on my end. I've poked around a bit but haven't really found any solutions thus far. I'll have to keep working on it.

Try resetting your router and modem, see if a refresh on that level helps your connection. Also, do some bandwidth tests and let us know how fast your connection is.

Oh, and Bruce: I changed some of the house layout a bit. Specifically, I got rid of player-dedicated beds and boxes because that's made of lame. Our continent is a dirty commie continent and it's going to stay that way. :p

Okay, bandwidth tests are in the range of 15-20 Mbps download, 1 Mbps upload. Searching the minecraft forums reveals a few people who are having this same issue: the person hosting the server runs it just fine but connecting people are having the same symptoms as me. It may be something as recent as today, which could explain Bruce's good connection.

15-20 down and 1 up? I got 1.5 down and .5 up. Boy howdy. I could use some bigger tubes.

I just put that there so neither of us would forget whose stuff was whose. I have a memory like a bucket made of sponge.

Aka, not a very good one.

After "Falling Through the map" Do you spawn normally or just fall forever? Sometimes the map will be invisible or you'll fall through the map then teleport back up where you should be. Probably something to do with the delay of connecting to the server and receiving the map. Generally these types of problems fix themselves pretty quickly though.
  • edited March 2011
Most of the time I do respawn on the map, but then I still have about a 30 second delay when destroying or placing blocks.

    Ladies and gentlemen, I present:

    The water wall

It is a wall surrounding the entrance of the Pad made of water, nothing but water on the sides, which I made when I found a bit of a glitch with the minecraft water physics.

Here are some pictures from inside:

    20110323043012.png

Now, you may say "Bruce, you utter rogue, why would you do such a thing?" Well, the reasons are twofold:

    1: It looks pretty
2: It is totally immune to creeper explosions and other mobs. They simply cannot get through it.

Took me four sodding hours, I hasten to add!

Okay, I call upon the collective wisdom of the OB to see if you all can help me. I like this game a lot and I want to play with others, but my minecraft connection still sucks. Here's the symptoms:

The world doesn't spawn immediately, or if it does, only a small portion of the world spawns and the rest is empty sky. In this empty sky, enemies and animals rocket up and down trying to find a spot to land. If I destroy or place a block, it will reappear/disappear and only perform the proper action about 30 seconds later. Also, mobs ignore me, and I can't hit anything. Finally, it takes about 30 second to interact with things.

As above, my up/down speed is decent. My network connections are apparently fine. I pinged myself and Google, which worked, and pinging our MC server yields a latency of about 350 ms. Google pings at about 40.

I've tried other MC servers, and all have the same result. I can, however, play multiplayer Team Fortress 2 just fine.

Finally, though the game runs graphically laggy on Megan's laptop, there's only about a .5 second delay when breaking blocks and hitting mobs. The connection works, even though it's almost too slow to play. Megan's laptop is connected wirelessly, mine is connected with an ethernet cable to our router.

Minecraft is excepted from my firewall and I've added port 25565 to my excepted ports.

So, anyone know where I can go from here?

EDIT: I should also note that occasionally the game disconnects me and gives me this error: "Connection Lost. Internal exception: java.net.SocketException:Connection reset".

I'd wonder if you have issues with your java platform install.
  • edited March 2011
Oh, I also reinstalled Java earlier this morning.

It sounds like there's some massive lag issue somewhere. But what with your extensive checking I can't imagine where.

Edit: In hindsight this post is likely no help to anyone at all. Sorry about that.

Edit 2: Are you running a Mac? I dunno if they still exist or not but I've heard about performance/compatibility issues on Macs.
  • edited March 2011
Thing is, I'm using a mac, and on a 3G connection and the gameplay is excellent for me...
  • edited March 2011
Well, I tried connecting my PC directly to my modem instead of going through my router, but it wouldn't immediately work. It recognized that it was connected, but it was "local area connection", limited or no connectivity. I feel like before I've had to wait a bit before it started, but I wonder if that might be the issue... some incompatibility with the modem. But then why does my connection work fine when connected to the modem THROUGH the router?

Still, the fact that I can connect seamlessly to Valve's servers just confuses the hell out of me.
  • edited March 2011
I'm pretty stumped. I doubt it's your connection. It's more likely to be some crazy driver or java setting thing.

    What's your RAM and Processor?

While it's simple graphics might deceive you, because of it's random map generation Minecraft is pretty hard on the processor and uses a ton of RAM. Though if it works fine in single player... Hmm...
  • edited March 2011
It's not an issue of processing power since the actual game itself runs fine. Even in multiplayer I can run around, jump, hit blocks, and open doors just fine... my framerate is pretty good most of the time. I just can't interact with stuff and the world doesn't update properly.

Apparently, though, this is a very unusual issue that's hit random people since the 1.3 update, as evidenced by this and a few other threads I found on minecraftforum. Some people have suggested some janky stuff you can do to your server to fix it, but it seems that mostly I'm going to have to wait for Mojang to fix it before I can play multiplayer smoothly.
  • edited March 2011
I've got a SMALL bit of a similar issue, I just chalked it up to server lag though. Hopefully when they update again everything will run a lot smoother.

Is your computer a laptop? Try going to a coffee shop or something, see if the connection improves. At least it would let you know if it's a problem with the computer or the modem/router.
  • edited March 2011
    Nope, desktop.
  • edited March 2011
Hmm... if you're using Wi-Fi, try using Ethernet instead (or vice-versa). Or try stealing a neighbor's Wi-Fi connection. Ethernet's harder to steal without getting caught.
  • edited March 2011
Stealing ethernet is doable though. My uni halls made you pay £90 a year for internet, but if you change your machine it recognises this and makes you pay the £90 again.

So when I got my iMac as an upgrade from my Macbook, I just spoofed the MAC address to that of the Macbook and saved myself £90.
  • edited March 2011
Unfortunately, my comp doesn't have a wireless card, and I don't own an adapter. So... I'm just gonna have to wait this one out.
  • edited March 2011
The latency I experience disappears after a bit. I'll be on relatively frequently.
  • edited March 2011
Okay, so after getting Megan's laptop to run the game pretty well on multiplayer, I... binged a bit today. You'll all probably notice a few changes, most obvious being the large sugar cane field in front of the base and the huge room Azrodal, Liz, and I have been excavating in the basement.

Just so you all know, this room is still dangerous, as there are several holes we still need to block up once we get the wood and the time. But this room should be glorious once it's finished. I've got a whole blueprint drawn out.
  • edited March 2011
We're currently constructing a biodome (not starring Pauly Shore, sadly) on the base mountaintop for safely growing wheat. I also put down some boardwalk so people can find the base from the spawn point. Some would question my decision to build the path entirely out of wood, but to that I say: cobblestone reeks of laziness, wood looks awesome.

If I find enough gold to make gold blocks, I'll redo the path. But for now wood will do.

Stupid question: did they fix the current version of Minecraft so it works on Safari? Because last time I tried the demo, Safari wouldn't recognize the program so I couldn't move my mouse in-game. I'd love to play the game, I just don't know if they fixed that.

You could download the client and not play it in a browser at all. That's what all the cool people are doing.
