Minecraft!
Well, I was really digging the discussion regarding Minecraft and thought we'd be able to mine a lot more information out of each others' brains by having everything in one thread rather than having to creep in another thread.
Mario and I mucked about on the server he setup, and it ran pretty damn well, so hopefully it'll run well enough for the minecrafters of the forum to play about.
The server address is 71.202.246.193. Mario and I built a nice little pad to the north east of the spawn point. You'll recognise it from a distance by the big flaming obelisk on the roof and the door. I haven't got round to it, but I will make a path leading straight from the spawn point to the pad to make it easier for everyone.

EDIT: I jumped on the server and.... it seems to have some issues. Most of the world doesn't load and most of the time I just fall through empty sky when I log in. Is this something on Minecraft's end or my end? I've heard the multiplayer can be laggy...
I'd love to get something running on The Orange Belt's Dreamhost server, if my computer doesn't work out I'll look into that a little more.
:timberlaser:
Oh, and Bruce: I changed some of the house layout a bit. Specifically, I got rid of player-dedicated beds and boxes because that's made of lame. Our continent is a dirty commie continent and it's going to stay that way.
Aka, not a very good one.
The water wall
It is a wall surrounding the entrance of the Pad made of water, nothing but water on the sides, which I made when I found a bit of a glitch with the minecraft water physics.
Here are some pictures from inside:
Now, you may say "Bruce, you utter rogue, why would you do such a thing?" Well, the reasons are twofold:
1: It looks pretty
2: It is totally immune to creeper explosions and other mobs. They simply cannot get through it.
Took me four sodding hours, I hasten to add!
The world doesn't spawn immediately, or if it does, only a small portion of the world spawns and the rest is empty sky. In this empty sky, enemies and animals rocket up and down trying to find a spot to land. If I destroy or place a block, it will reappear/disappear and only perform the proper action about 30 seconds later. Also, mobs ignore me, and I can't hit anything. Finally, it takes about 30 second to interact with things.
As above, my up/down speed is decent. My network connections are apparently fine. I pinged myself and Google, which worked, and pinging our MC server yields a latency of about 350 ms. Google pings at about 40.
I've tried other MC servers, and all have the same result. I can, however, play multiplayer Team Fortress 2 just fine.
Finally, though the game runs graphically laggy on Megan's laptop, there's only about a .5 second delay when breaking blocks and hitting mobs. The connection works, even though it's almost too slow to play. Megan's laptop is connected wirelessly, mine is connected with an ethernet cable to our router.
Minecraft is excepted from my firewall and I've added port 25565 to my excepted ports.
So, anyone know where I can go from here?
EDIT: I should also note that occasionally the game disconnects me and gives me this error: "Connection Lost. Internal exception: java.net.SocketException:Connection reset".
Edit: In hindsight this post is likely no help to anyone at all. Sorry about that.
Edit 2: Are you running a Mac? I dunno if they still exist or not but I've heard about performance/compatibility issues on Macs.
Still, the fact that I can connect seamlessly to Valve's servers just confuses the hell out of me.
While it's simple graphics might deceive you, because of it's random map generation Minecraft is pretty hard on the processor and uses a ton of RAM. Though if it works fine in single player... Hmm...
Apparently, though, this is a very unusual issue that's hit random people since the 1.3 update, as evidenced by this and a few other threads I found on minecraftforum. Some people have suggested some janky stuff you can do to your server to fix it, but it seems that mostly I'm going to have to wait for Mojang to fix it before I can play multiplayer smoothly.
So when I got my iMac as an upgrade from my Macbook, I just spoofed the MAC address to that of the Macbook and saved myself £90.
Just so you all know, this room is still dangerous, as there are several holes we still need to block up once we get the wood and the time. But this room should be glorious once it's finished. I've got a whole blueprint drawn out.
If I find enough gold to make gold blocks, I'll redo the path. But for now wood will do.
