My ISP switches our IP occasionally, I think it had to do with getting a larger slice of IPs for a business or something. Ya know, essentially defragmenting their open spots.
Just force update Minecraft. Problem solved. Actually, no. After the first run with 1.8 I forced it and now the launcher is bugged. Blargin. I'll try and reinstall, I guess.
Edit: And of course Minecraft.net is down. Fantastic. And here I was hoping to play with dust.
Also! Notch has stated in some places that pre-1.8 maps may not have access to 1.8 features. I can't find any official word on this one way or the other, but it may raise some important questions about how we want The Orange Belt map to proceed.
If 1.8 cuts off old maps, would we wish to start a brand new map, or keep the server running on 1.7? Personally I kinda like the idea of being thrown into a new world (that's most of the appeal of Minecraft, after all), but I'd like to get everyone's opinions.
Of course, it may work fine and have no issues. That'd be cool too.
Since it hasn't been posted yet, here's the Minecraft Adventure Update trailer:
Paul and I are trying out some new maps, feel free to join us if you're around. I'll let you know when we've settled on a good new world for all y'all.
EDIT: New world secured! We built a cabin in the spawn region to get things started. Depending on where you drop in it might be a little tricky to find (we plan to add a watchtower for improved visibility), but it's fully stocked with any supplies you might need to get started.
It's worth noting that I have saved our old map for posterity. But it's good to start anew every now and then.
I got on for a little bit (all I can afford on my connection at home), but couldn't find the base. Could you give a compass direction or some landmarks or something?
I think spawn zones are much wider in 1.8 than they used to be. The cabin is in a forest biome near a desert biome border. If you spawn in a large body of water, the cabin is probably due west. I've started work on the tower but it's still not as visible from great distances as I'd like.
Of course, feel free to start other waypoints wherever you end up. We can work on combining them as we get a feel for the lay of the land.
I had considered that in the initial design. I figure we can build sub-basement floors or stack floors atop the cabin design to accommodate barracks. As far as tree and sugar farms go, there's plenty of space on the surface surrounding the cabin. My main goal was just making a hub for adventurers starting fresh in this new world. I figured not being embedded in a mountain will allow us to more easily expand across the landscape. We can build a whole city! (on rock and roll)
The quarters are being built as small buildings, separate from the hub building aside from underground tunnels connected to its basement. Feel free to build new buildings and attach them to the hub for your own use as quarters!
Extending the cardinal roads (and beginning two of them) is also a primary goal.
EDIT: I've taken the liberty to extend some of the underground tunnels leading from the hub. Feel free to extend those too and attach your homes to them when you get to it! If you wish, your homes can be primarily subterranean, but please make at least one small entrance above ground to indicate the presence of a structure. It would be unfortunate if someone were to decide to build a surface structure or basement, only to find themselves unwelcome guests in someone elses' abode.
When work begins on a subbasement we may find it useful to build small homes there as well.
Also, I have placed a couple hundred torches around the perimeter of the hub. Despite that, do not consider yourself safe walking around in the night or morning until the area is deforested and you have clear line of sight. If you spot a dark area, please place a torch to light it up!
Finally, the currently explored tunnels mostly converge on a single, very large, underground ravine, the floor of which is at lava level. I will put in an effort to make it clear which tunnels lead to it. Work will begin on a mining hub stemming from the ravine: two small towers on either side, half built out from-- half carved into either face of the ravine, each side connected by small bridges on multiples levels. Two or three of such structures may be built in the center and both ends of the ravine. EDIT: Or not, one single tower built halfway into the one side should suffice.
There are two facts to keep in mind to build a hydrocushion:
Falling into water at least 2 blocks deep will not cause any damage, regardless of the distance fallen
Water will not flow into ladders
The best way to make one is to enclose a 2x2x2 (alter to fit your shaft) space with dirt and fill it entirely with still water. Don't take any shortcuts here, make sure it's all still water, otherwise the flow will make it more difficult to walk through. Start the fill from the bottom and work up.
Place 2 block wide pillars around the dirt. Remove the dirt and replace with ladders. Your setup should be thus:
I haven't been able to get on lately, so I will go ahead and put this out there:
There's a swamp near the Spawn Lake. I forget the exact compass direction, but I believe it is on the opposite bank as the main fort. I built a house out of a hollowed-out red megashroom there, which has a handful (8, I believe) of jack-o-lanterns in it. I've been meaning to take those to the base and use them to construct some steet lamps. If anyone wants to grab them (and anything else useful I might have forgotten in that house) and put them in or around the base, they are more than welcome to. If not, I'll do it meself when I next have a chance to get on.
Oh, and if you go, bring some dirt or something. I was having a lot of troubles with creepers, so the ladder to the house may not be there anymore.

To use this, copy it to your minecraft data folder.
In windows, it's in %appdata%/minecraft/ (Just type %appdata% into windows explorer's address bar)
Linux is ~/.minecraft/
Mac is in your user account's Library, in Application Support.
I'd recommend renaming the existing minecraft.jar so you can revert easily.

Will the Enderman be more frightening to me than Creepers? THE ANSWER IS YES OH GOD NEVER LOOK AWAY
If you do start anew, let us know when. I certainly would like to help with the initial construction of the Pad 2.0

Quick question.... you know that water cushion we had to take us down to the diamond mine on the old server? How did we do that?
