If you hadn't quoted there it might have been ambiguous to which fun fact you were responding.
It's useless if there is only one possible statement within the context you could potentially be responding to.

But does it really matter if I needlessly quote something?
But before you can type a response you have, at the very least, to either click the text box in the quick reply or click the quote button. The quote button is higher on the page and therefore closer if one is scrolling down.
Factoring moving your cursor down or over is a useless discrepancy. Your cursor may very well be be closer to the quick reply box than the quote box, and if it's anywhere on the left side of the screen this is most certainly the case.
Visual efficiency is also important however, as it is faster to read and easier to look at if there is a smaller amount of unnecessary clutter. Use my signature below as an example, as I made sure that it took up the least possible space and included the most information possible. A one line post takes up as much space as a one line post lacking the signature entirely.
Really, though, we don't want to send the impression to this crop of new people that we're a bunch of nitpickers who scream at people for the slightest quirk of behavior that isn't "usual." As long as there aren't gigantic picture sigs or slews of useless threads or posts, what's the harm?
So, we've got a few new people. Did y'all come together?
Also, do any of you know Jayla/Locked in a crystal personally? She posted in the RPG thread but she hasn't been on in a week and can't accept messages, and I'd hate for her to miss out now that it's back.
Why did you quote him? He was the last post, you were obviously responding to him....
Sometimes it makes sense to quote someone if you are directly responding to them, even if your post "should" be right after theirs. This particular forum isn't as energetic now as it has been in the past, but there were definitely times when not quoting would result in a mixup.
Personally, I think you're being way too anal about this.

No I came here alone. I found it through Zelda Comic and thought it seemed like a pretty cool place to be so here I am.
I'm Rorandon, or Casey, or Airon, or Thorax the Impaler, or about a million other things, depending on how you know me. I'm camping all of next week (And the next, and the next, and the...), so if I'm not on I didn't leave. I like to bake too, so I'll bake you food if you're just awesome like that.

He did it to us again

I will keep your concern's in mind. Though it is my nature to waste as much time as I can.

On a similar note I'm also going to be gone this week, though it's likely no one will notice unless they read this.
