Comics Workout

If Stef gets her own thread, so do I!

As Matt was so quick to point out, I actually had two Brew panels to work on, so I hurriedly threw this little gem together. Not a great deal of drawing was actually involved, but I was instantly smitten with the asshole that is a tiny wizard. At the pacing that Brews generally run, it's unlikely I'll have any more panels to work on this month, so I guess I'll have to come up with other drawing projects to satisfy the daily requisite. This one doesn't count for today's anyway since I made both panels last night, so I'll draw something else up after work.

I cracked up when you showed me this. I love how Judith's daydreaming quickly turns to the morbid and twisted for no real reason. Does Judith desire to see bunnies in hydrofluoric acid? Or does she not have control over her musings? Either is awesome.

In other news, I think I hurt Q-tip's feelings when i told him that this was going to be posted on a seeeecret forum that not even moderators could see.
  • edited May 2007
Well would Q-Tip be interested in joining our little cadre? I think he'd enjoy it! Though pixel comics might be hard to produce in a comic workout.
  • edited May 2007
I'm pretty sure he draws those, rather than building them pixel-by-pixel.

Guess where I was when I drew this... >_<

Dude, you do live in the woods! Nice comic, also. I like the inking on the trees.
  • edited May 2007
I liked this one too. Are you going to draw manaically with us this month? Say yes!
  • edited May 2007
I told him to say yes.
  • edited May 2007
    But did he say it??
  • edited May 2007
    yes

    May 1.
    Sick.
Cop-out by using the sketch-from-the-archives cheat, from early last summer, when I went to Northampton, MA, to hang with some webcomics folks.

Name-dropping PLUS wussing out on the FIRST DAY? BAD JUJU.
Should have drawn fever dreams about zombie tetris and going back to grad school in one of those "why does this not look like my old campus? and why is it in Toronto? and why am I asking when I can meet Scott Pilgrim now?" nonsensical slurries.

    May 2.
    Finally not feverish.
Test out new watercolor pens and return to old standby of cheap-o set of PRANG watercolors. PRANG is more fun to say!

Also, find secret cure to the mystery illness.

The bento box looks awesome! Feeling better then?

I'm pretty dead tonight. Not sure how much of a rally I'm going to make for May 2.

Annnnnd I forgot to make one after that panel. For several days. But to make up for it, here's some Witch's Brew character artwork I whipped up just now! I keep forgetting that Pictochat is kinda fun to draw with, even when there's no one in the vicinity for collaboration fun.

And now for something a little cooler! I was drawing random sketches of the main protagonist in devolution revolution (ah, that old thing), and it somehow turned into a horrible comic about a trainer abusing his Pokémon's love of following orders for personal gain. I've posted it on the devo revo page as well, because it occurred to me that I hadn't updated it in like 18 months. I felt a little ashamed, but I'm hoping this month of drawing stuff will help me get back in the mood to draw comics again. I feel like I'm getting to that point.

    20070505-pokesploitation.jpg

In the original draft of the comic, the trainer was going to spit out the soda in disgust, and berate Oddish for giving him diet soda, but I actually rather like Oddish, and didn't want him to receive blatant verbal abuse. I figured taking advantage of his sweet ignorance would keep him happy at least..

I also did some really uninspired sketches, but this was all that I could bring myself to scan. Lazy.

I was a big fan of the colored word bubbles. And the Battleseegly reference.
  • edited May 2007
Yes, I've often considered giving up this 'comics' thing and just making Battlestar references full-time.

New Witch's Brew! Along with Matt and Q-Tip, I threw together a DS PictoChat-assisted Brew. It is called "PictoBrew"! It's a portmanteau.

This was my favorite one to draw:

As least in part because it's fanart of one of Paul's old comics. He may let them fade away, but I never will!

So Björk's new album Volta came out a few days ago. It's easily more approachable than Medúlla, and since I'm one of the few people that actually liked Medúlla, I'm diggin' the new tunes (even if one sounds like it came from Phantom of the Opera, at least when Stef sings along with it). Bjork.com is running a contest for fan-created music videos for one of the singles, "Innocence". Though I generally don't think I've got the talent to compete on such a level, the song's lyrics seemed to lend themselves to the setting of a video game, and I like video games. I envisioned the video playing out as an 8-bit sidescrolling game, full of the vibrant colors that the crazy costume from the album cover (Paul called it the "Björkfrüt") conveys. Here are the first sprites I made! Maybe more will come of this, maybe not, but you can't say that I didn't make an 8-bit version of Björk. I thought the most inspired bit was my interpretation of the orange spikes wrapped around her midsection as feathers. Not that you need arms to jump on bad guys' heads. I foresee using the pale orb on her shoulder for laser blasts.

When a leg-warmer and a bulky-weight sock love each other very much, they produce iPod socks! And when they get together with a sheep in a kinky three-way, you get a minisweater.

I love the coloring job. You use multiple shades of pink better than anyone.
  • edited May 2007
That sheep wants you to know that it was something special. Don't cheapen it.

Hah, do you remember my original site decor that was all crazy shades of pink and red? Probably overkill.

I actually like your sprite better than the cover. To me, her cover looks like she's cosplaying that sprite.

I don't know what the orb is, but in sprite form it almost looks like she's got that anime nose-bubble that says she's asneep. Sneep well, Bjork!

p.s: She's there, the Bjorkfrut of the operaaaaa....

You should DEFINITELY make this, Mario. DO IT.

I'm tempted! I just need to figure out how to animate things again. I knew a little about it this one time. It'll probably involve "borrowing" a good Flash-authoring application, like Fireworks or, well, Flash. As much as I love Toon Boom Studio, it's probably not appropriate for the 2D set this video would need.

Also, new drawing! Some devo revo characters drawn in the newer style, as a means to improve on the general design. I drew the girl in this style once and hated how it came out, but then realized that her face is supposed to be drawn lower down on her head than the boy's. Once I fixed that, she came out a lot better.

Oh, and here are some sketches I drew up pre-Björk-spriting. Whenever I create a sprite, I try to make a bunch of drawings first to get an idea of how to break down the figure into giant pixels. It requires a fair bit of planning. Sometimes I even have to draw sprites over the sketch like some screwed-up trace, but the fact that Björkfrüt is built around a large simple shape (a spherical body) made it easy enough to freehand. Or whatever the sprite form of freehanding is.

Are they doing some kind of wacky robot-dance, or does this movie take place in the universe of Breakin'? They look cute!
