Hmmm, The Iron Giant would be pretty good, I also suggest Versus and Returner, they're both Japanese. Versus is about an escaped prisoner and some random girl trying to escape a haunted forest with yakuza zombies in it. And somewhere along the way he picks up a sword and an anti-tank rifle somehow. Returner is seriously too awesome for words to describe. I'm going to hold my breath until it's put on the list.

Both of those movies are winners.

    For SCIENCE!

Did we watch Clash of the Titans this year? Because I need to see it again. I just never get tired of pointing out how the male lead looks like Jim Morrison, except dumb.

It's already on the list for June 18th. Can't wait to watch it again.

EDIT: Added a few of your suggestions to the list, we're now covered through August. Unfortunately, I had to remove Puppet Masters; all my efforts to find the original film on DVD have been fruitless (plenty of shitty-looking sequels though). If someone can show me that there's some way to access a modern copy of this film, I'll add it back in. I'll be going through your other suggestions soon, most of them will probably make it without a hitch (but be warned: I will hold you to watching your own movie suggestions at the appointed times :p). More please!

If we're adding Japanese movies, how about adding Casshern?
  • edited May 2007
Ah, to be SCIENCE!tific, might I also recommend the under-rated Small Soldiers? (if it makes the list, bear in mind A. this is from the writer of Gremlins, B. he didn't get to do half the stuff he wanted because the production company wanted him to make another dumbed down kids movie like Gremlins 2, C. It's actually fairly written as a satyrical outlook on war, if you can ignore that dumb kid.)

didn't it end up with a rating of PG-13, and therefore fail at the box office?
  • edited May 2007
Small Soldiers wasn't an exceptionally great film (though probably a decent enough kid's movie), but it'll always have a special place in my heart as Phil Hartman's last movie.

Matt, Japanese films are fine, but I would like to watch a few movies sans subtitles and English dubs every now and then. ^_^ And in this particular case, although the movie sounds interesting, it never appears to have received a stateside release on DVD (at least according to Wikipedia), so finding a copy might prove difficult.

The only problem is that Casshern sucked. A lot.

Guitar Wolf Zero is a winner though. Rock and Roll, zombies and Japanese craziness. Truly a film that will stand the test of time.

I hope the Movie group is still going on. Here are a few films to add possibly.

Somewhere in Time- About Time travel and stars the late Christopher Reeves. It's more on romance aspect although it has a little SCIENCE.

Transformers: The Movie(The Animated one from the 80's)- I didn't see this one posted before although I didn't check all the pages of this thread.

Real Genius - A comedy about college life and 80's laser technology.... :D

Anyone wanna try this thing again? I've received numerous suggestions for films, but since no one ever watched anything on the first go, I'm a little apprehensive to try again. If you wish to participate in SCIENCE! Movies, you need to state some kind of dedication to watching more than just the movies you suggest be added. Like a book club, you don't pick and choose which movies to watch; you watch everything and discuss it with your peers! So who's with me? There are a lot of films we missed the last time around, and a lot more to see beyond that!

    Rah! I'm in!
  • edited December 2007
I'll be in until I move next month. After that I'm at the mercy of whatever bootlegs I find in hidden back alley shops in China.
  • edited December 2007
Aww, but those are the BEST bootlegs.
  • edited December 2007
I would certainly like to get in on this.

I'm unstickying this thread for now.

I would like to berate people into getting back into it, but the truth of the matter is that I don't have access to movie renting too well right now, and I feel like an idiot for hassling people to do something I can't.

I should be working full-time in April and will finally get myself a quickflix account for maximum rental efficiency.

Expect an all-new SCIENCE! movie thread then.

    sounds sexy.

    Soooo... Is this thing back?

Apologies if I've revived a thread that should have stayed dead. I'll help you guys shoot it in the head, stab it through the heart, and sprinkle holy water over it, if needed.

I dunno. Is this real? It's incredible. I don't know if I can believe it.

Those giant sea monsters certainly hate planes.

I want to do this!! Let's get some movies suggested!
  • edited May 2009
I heartily suggest Dead Snow. It was an entrant in this years sundance movie festival, and although it wasn't much to be taken seriously, IT INVOLVES ZOMBIE NAZIS. You may have to order a copy directly from Sundance, (maybe? not sure.) as it's in Norwegian and most internet streams lack subtitles. Even though it was a comical poke at zombie horror it was excellent nonetheless. Highly recommended!
  • edited May 2009
Nazi zombies, while an awesome mashup, are not a new concept. Bevin owns the DVD for Zombie Lake! But Dead Snow does sound pretty damn cool.

Are you guys serious about SCIENCE! movies? Because that is my dream, that enough people would watch these movies to warrant resurrecting the group. Don't toy with me now!
  • edited May 2009
I will definitely do it if I can download them. The Chinese black market for movies does not cover stuff this obscure. So if there are torrents of whatever movie we're watching I'll definitely join in.
  • edited May 2009
Come on now, I've warned people about this before. We can't condone movie piracy on the forums. Certainly we can have more mainstream fare, as it would convince more people to watch them.

I've been having some notions as how to best revamp the SCIENCE! movie formula, and was particularly inspired by The Greatest Movie EVER! Podcast. They do movies less often and have roundtable discussions about them in podcast form (obviously). The movies are definitely of a similar genre to our SCIENCE! fare. I don't want to milk off of their strategies too much, but the setup seems to work well for them, so maybe we could use it as a blueprint. Maybe schedule a movie every two weeks or every month, giving everyone more time to procure and watch it, then host a discussion starting on a set date.

And the Orange Belt podcast could certainly use more content... What does everyone think?

I would be down! This gives me an excuse to get a Netflix account again.
  • edited May 2009
For the record, I've never seen copyright protected videos sold here. Ever. Hollywood just doesn't bother.

Please note that I'm not advocating piracy because I'm lazy or because I'm a pirate. I need it because without it I quite literally cannot participate in the SCIENCE movie threads without it.

If you don't want to advocate it then that's fine. Pick whatever movies you want to watch, and I will attempt to acquire them by whatever channels are available to me.

I'm down!! Let's get some roundtable discussion up in this muthafucka!!

May I suggest Repo! The Genetic Opera? It's a musical where there is a pandemic of organ failures in the not so distant future. Millions die, until a Bio-tech company called GeneCo provides the necessary transplants to save the survivors. Designer organs and face transplants and such become popular, but if you people dont make their payments, a repo man comes and violently cuts out all the organs they owe GeneCo. It's by the people who did Saw, and actually a really well done musical, but with people getting disemboweled.
