There are plenty of options. Various explosive projectiles (Nikita missiles, C4 that works like the SSB mines), CQC, and maybe even Raiden's energy sword. It should be interesting to see how they adapt a stealth-based character to SSB.
...this got me interested in how he operates in DreamMix TV World Fighters, so I checked out GameFAQs. Apparently he's got the normal punch and kick stuff, plus (like I guessed a few seconds ago) C4 that can be planted on the ground or on an opponent.
"We thought a lot about what to do with Snake and his moves in Super Smash Bros. Brawl," said Sakurai. "As you all know Snake walks around with a gun, but with Super Smash Bros. I didn't want to bring in a lot of real weapons. So that was a real challenge. But conversely, if we could use things like rocket launchers and other explosives, not only would that be fitting for Snake, but it would work for the other characters. But who knows. Maybe Snake will exclusively use explosives throughout the game."
That's exactly the kind of thinking that sits very well with me. Only problem is that annoying kids would start complaining about why some other distinctly not-awesome (They will no doubt claim the exact opposite) inanimate object is not also a playable character.
Speaking of distinctly not-awesome, and annoying, how about Reggie Fils-Aime? He's the president of NOA as of today, so it would make slightly more sense than putting the VP of marketing in the game. But still totally no sense, so it would be funny.
It is so weird to see MGS3 Snake's head on MGS2 Snake's body.
Also, I wonder if there's any kind of game engine yet, or if all they have is character models and one or two stages. I sort of got the feeling from the E3 trailer that this was all stuff they thought would be cool, but hadn't really implemented yet. Also troubling was that quote about how they didn't know how Snake was going to play yet...
The game engine used in the trailer looks identical to Super Smash Bros. Melee at the moment, albeit with slightly nicer character models. Though most of the trailer is pre-rendered stuff, you get some nice glimpses of in-game fighting (the castle, Meta-Knight kicking Mario and Kirby's asses, Pit jumping around, Snake-in-the-box but not Snake-out-of-the-box, etc). But yeah, it probably still has a way to go yet, since they said they were still propositioning other game companies for the inclusion of additional third-party properties. That said, the game engine could be farther along than has been publicly disclosed; I imagine that adding additional characters is something that can be done at any step along the way.

Big ba-da-boom.
DAAAAAAAAMN!
PS: GODDAMN! I WANNA PLAY THIS GAME NOW! Whoever says the Wii is lacking in the graphics department is idiotic!

It seemed that Super Smash Bros. likes to introduce characters long forgotten in Nintendo history.
Though I did have no idea who the ice climbers were....
...Well, maybe not THAT deprived.
Or Ragnar. Ragnar would be cool, too.
