You, my friend, are twice as cool as you were a half hour ago.

That puts your coolness meter at 2! Yay for you :).

When Inksandwich exploded, I had just started my phase of not visiting the forums everyday. I came back like 5 days later and said "Whoa, I think I missed something here."
That's sorta what happened to me, except I had pretty much gotten bored and quit the forums altogether, but then Shawn sent out an email about some thing that happened, and I went back to the forums out of curiosity. But the mess had been cleaned up and there was no trace of anything that might have happened. I think Shawn sent a link to the Orange Belt with that email, and because of that you're stuck with me.

Curse you Shawn!! I will never forgive you.

    Shawn is still old...
  • edited June 2008
If anything, he's just older than before.
  • edited June 2008
    That's pretty freakin old.
  • edited June 2008
Now he's a dad, too. What's the deal with that?

He did? The same guy that edited out our Orange Belt links when we left Inksandwich so no one could find us, and as far as I could tell forbade people from mentioning belts that were orange?

That was pretty cool of him.

Shawn wasn't that bad! And coming from possibly one of the least biased people from that time, even our very own Stef wasn't quite the picture of awesome in all that either from my memory. Give me a bit here. Let me put in my thoughts...

    *gets up on soap box*

Shawn tried joining the OB once. Well after the big crazy mess (largely Shawn's own mess). It was practically an admission of defeat and a clear desire to put the whole thing behind him. Stef apparently wasn't in a forgiving mood yet though as she promptly scolded him and gave him the boot. I never knew the precise details, but it seemed harsh. Harsh enough that Sammy followed Shawn right out and I very nearly left too. I've made a pretty random comment about that to some here with no explanation once. So now you know the deal behind that. The point is, I think Shawn was the only one who apologized for anything that happened. He practically admitted responsibility for everything (he wasn't responsible for everything), yet he basically still got left out in the cold. I think that was even what that email was about. It was an explanation and a bit of an apology (not the only apology). So in this forum where people sometimes get all drunk and start tossing out confessions of love, don't hate on the old man. He's the one living out the rest of his life with a stain of regret on his soul. And he's a father now so he's got bigger things on his mind these days than worrying about past mistakes of that sort.

When you say that was pretty cool of him, mario, you better mean it! It takes a strong person to admit failures and try to amend them.
Stef don't need to take no guff from nobody either just in case anybody thought that. She forged the Orange Belt on a matter of principle. She stands up for what she believes in. And she believed in us apparently! She's uncompromising in her desire to keep the focus on the community.
And mario did as much as anybody to try to keep it civil when things got rough. Be nice when he starts being a topic nazi. He's just trying to maintain order to avoid making some mistakes all over again that were too common in the more lax inksandwich.

The Orange Belt is the picture of an awesome SUCCESS. It rose up out of turmoil and has lasted for years now. Don't fret the nitty gritty details, just know that this forum isn't the way it is by accident.

    *steps down from soap box*

With that said, I succeeded in NOT locking my keys in my car again like I did yesterday.

Well, I can't think how else I would've found out... I mean, I had pretty much already quit the internet at that point.

    Meh, the text is worthwhile.

Edit: Quit the internet!? Are you mad? Or were you mad?

Now that you mentioned the e-mail, I too remember receiving an e-mail from him and I also remember there being an apology. I don't remember how I found out about the orangebelt, but ya know, I bet it was from the email too. I don't know else I would have found it, since I wasn't quite up to date with everything that was going on. I never had a problem with anyone on the forums though, perhaps because I don't know anyone well enough to form a bad opinion about them. Whatever the reasoning, it's all good now.

I do miss inksandwich, even though the orangebelt is just as good and is probably much better.

Inksandwich seemed to have a more active, enthusiastic community. Especially whenever Elliot updated. Now that I think about it, Orange Belt moves at about the same pace, but it all seems less webcomic-y and more "I'm not your buddy, friend"-y or "The count to 10,000"-y. Which isn't necessarily a good thing.
  • edited June 2008
Yes. You need to make more webcomics, hlavco. It's the only solution.

How very soapy! I would like to point out that Stef and I both founded The Orange Belt, not just Stef. Both of us created The Orange Belt to make sure our community would maintain an emphasis on the members involved, instead of commercial endeavors. This is not to say that Shawn wasn't within his rights to make such changes to Inksandwich; he site belonged to him, and he could do whatever he wanted with it. By creating The Orange Belt, however, we were able to leave him to his own devices and start a site that held more closely to our perceived ideals of the community. We also didn't like his tendency to make unilateral decisions without even consulting Stef (the co-admin at the time), much less the forumites at large, which is why we try to keep things a little more public in general around here, gauging community interest in whatever changes we make. I sincerely hope we're succeeding on these fronts.

Also, I wouldn't say that Shawn's motives when registering here were entirely legitimate or in the interest of patching things up. If he had any such desire, maybe he would have made such efforts in direct communication with Stef or myself, I dunno. I didn't try to get too involved, but he seemed to show up here solely with an intent to cause trouble. Sammy never came here in any real capacity as far as I can remember, which I didn't fully understand at the time; we tried to make sure everyone at Inksandwich knew they were welcome here, but a few people never made the crossover (Mike would be another example, though I think he was handling some administrative duties at Inksandwich after the split, so maybe he felt a potential conflict of interest coming here). And of course, our accounts and forums being deleted from Inksandwich made it difficult to make any such communications to Inksandwich friends and well-wishers at the time.

For the record: all Inksandwichians are still absolutely 100% welcome at The Orange Belt. I miss a lot of those guys, and wish they'd stop by for a spell, but I can understand if they've moved on to other communities and don't wish to discuss our numerous mindless meme threads. ^__^ If any of you are lurking here, feel free to IM me to shoot the breeze or whatever (AIM: mpanighetti@mac.com). Be forewarned, I may try and convince you to register at the forums, or revive your dead comic projects that I still vividly remember and cherish (I'm looking at you, Puppy Chow!).

I don't mean to sound sore or anything (I'm definitely not), but I never got to see Shawn's apology/farewell email because my Inksandwich account was deleted. This is honestly the first I've ever heard of it, but if it said what you guys say it said, then yes, I am sincere in saying it was cool of him. In my communications with him toward the end of my tenure at Inksandwich, I never got the indication that he was feeling at all apologetic, so it's cool if he ultimately had a change of heart. I can't speak for his attempts to amend failures, because if he did so, he forgot to tell Stef or myself. But I absolutely don't hate on Shawn, mostly because I'm no longer in a subservient position to him. I wish him the best with his being a father, and am glad he's moved past all this like the rest of us (hopefully) have.

As an aside, Stef and I bumped into Shawn at a Comic-Con post-Inksandwich, and said hi and everything! The meetup was cordial but extremely awkward, which is basically the most awesome kind of social situation ever. Neither of us really said anything about the forums, and instead made small talk about his shirts and whatever panel we both happened to be at. Hilarious!

Okay, I think that covers just about everything there is to cover on this topic from my end. Inksandwich people are cool, The Orange Belt is cool, and puppy chow is delicious. And yes, Shawn is most definitely old. John McCain ain't got nothin' on Shawn. Also, the cactus smiles sometimes.

So there you have it, young'uns. The sordid tale of Inksandwich and the founding of the Orange Belt, from several elder forumites. A grand tale.

Also, I ate Qdoba for the first time today! Ever! It was rockin'-ly delicious!
  • edited June 2008
Well, I feel truly wiser for now knowing that sordid tale. I have been here for many years, although my arrival was still post-trauma, thus I never knew the details.

My own personal success, I've just started a new girl in the last few weeks, and she doesn't speak English, so we must communicate in Chinese. This is now the third language I've dated in, the previous two being English and Japanese.

As an addendum I think the power of the mighty soapbox may have gotten to me and much of what I said was perhaps worded more strongy than is quite accurate in my wall of text earlier. It was mostly my perception of those events, but I have no records to confirm those views to be true. I do remember seeing an apology or two from Shawn as was appropriate, but I suppose I shouldn't be putting words in his mouth based on my somewhat hazy memory. After all, as mario suggested, his apologies were mostly to the members of that old forum who were still there and not directed to reach some of those who may have deserved it.

Also, I don't even know how to pronounce "Qdoba". What is it?

It is a Mexican (think taco bell but more authentically mexican and higher quality food) fast food place and it is delicious.

I think that the most amazingly successful part is that all 3 languages have been with Chinese girls.

Oh. Started dating. Sorry. It is lamentable, my English capabilities are slowly beginning to atrophy.

And queen, my coolness meter is at least a 4.
