Anyone seen anything about Firefall? I want to play it but my computer probably wouldn't run it.
  • edited March 2011
Looks like a pretty sweet game. And I don't particularly like shooters even. Though it is an MMO... Granted it's also free so whatever.

If anyone can find some system specs for this it'd be greatly appreciated (Though I'm fairly confident my computer will be fine.)

I have acually gone back and played some Unreal Tournament 99 lately online, Also some good ol' L4D2

I started playing with the free version of Minecraft... and I want more!!

So, I have a few questions that hopefully you all can answer. What I like about Minecraft is the ability to build whatever you want. Obviously the free version falls short of what I want to do, especially after watching this video:

Obviously I don't know what the beta version is capable of. I know that this person is using a texture pack and a fly mod. But is there still the option for an infinite resources/no monsters sandbox mode in the full version? Can you mess with the sky to give it different textures? (or is that just part of certain texture packs?) What about that illumination... how is that achieved?
  • edited March 2011
There is indeed. You can custom texture the game with some simple tools, and only what you want. In addition, you can turn off the monsters (Which Vienna does. Pussy). As for infinite resources, well, you only have as much as you collect. If you want lots of diamond, you need to mine lots of diamond. However, save game editors exist to let you have whatever you want. Illumination can be done a number of ways: Torches (easiest), lava, jack o'lanterns, etc.

(Pro tip: Try using one to give yourself as much dynamite as it's possible to hold. See how many it takes to crash the game.)

So this guy either had to hack it to give himself infinite resources or he had to collect all that crap? What about glowstone? I heard someone talking about that.
  • edited March 2011
Glowstone is in the Nether. And you need Obsidian to make a portal to the Nether. If you're an admin of a server you can also give yourself (Or others) resources if you know the decimal code for it (Said codes are also on the wiki). So you could theoretically just play single player in your own multiplayer server and just summon up resources or tools when you need them.
  • edited March 2011
..... dammit, now I want this game even more. Nether? Portals? This is actually something of a world in its beta form, isn't it?
  • edited March 2011
The Nether is essentially just hell. Notch wanted a cooler name for it though. It's kinda a fast travel dimension. Every block you travel in the Nether you travel 16 in the over-world. But you have to make portals to travel between the two worlds.

The Nether also has tons of lava and some pretty ridiculous creatures in it; Like Zombie Pig-men.

Builds like this probably involve running one's own Minecraft server, since you can give yourself any number of any resource via mod powers. I like dropping into single-player sessions and seeing what I can do on my own, or collaborating with friends on a non-cheating server and seeing what we can make.

I hope more people pick up the beta, I'd love to run an Orange Belt server of fun times!

    Damn right, OB Minecraft muthafuckers!
  • edited March 2011
    Lets do it!
  • edited March 2011
I just bought it, so I'm game. I'm a noob though, so I'll need some guidance. Much kudos to Bruce for helping me through the initial stages.
  • edited March 2011
I'm convinced! Just gotta figure out these dynamic DNS services and find a good free one...
  • edited March 2011
We could chip in and get a server hosted for us?
  • edited March 2011
Actually, there is a minecraft server hosting place that costs £10 p/m, which has enough RAM and such to host 6 people smoothly. Would that suffice?

If so, I'll whack out the ol' card and get us setup.

I was thinking of just running it off my home computer.

I've been playing a game called Vindictus for a little while. I may talk about that later. Gotta go to bed now. Also, Team Fortress 2 is apparently free now. That may be relevant to some peoples' interests.

I've been playing TF2 for about 4 months now. I usually play as Medic. I'd love for the OB to get a clan going.

I've been meaning to check that game out. I've owned it since I bought the Orange Box all those years ago, but neglected to give it a try because I'm terrible at multiplayer deathmatch games when everyone else on the server is more experienced; it doesn't leave much room for personal growth.

I was the same way. Here's what you can do:

Play Soldier and spam rockets until someone says critical rockets are ruining the game

Play Heavy and spam minigun until you get shot too many times by snipers

Play Demoman and spam sticky bombs until someone calls you a hacker (this should happen after 1 kill)

Play Pyro and spam W+Mouse1 until someone calls the Pyro overpowered (this is currently happening)

Play Scout and try to hit people with your bat the whole time while double jumping

Play Sniper and do nothing (if done correctly, you will be mistaken by a few people for a professional player)

Play Engineer, erect a dispenser, build a sentry, and hit them with your wrench for the entire game.

Play Spy, and backstab medics and heavies until everyone on the server starts spychecking instead of actually playing (Also, make sure to rename your knife "lol i stabb u" if you get a name tag)

Or do what I did and play Medic and follow a heavy (or the best, non-scout/sniper/spy/engie player) around, healing him until you get backstabbed by a spy one too many times.

I bloody love TF2. I'd be totally up for getting a clan going.

I play on Korean servers. Those crazy Koreans are good at all PC games. I sympathize with mario's complaint.

Also, I just recently got Terraria. $10 dollar sprite-based sandbox game at 17mb is holding my attention much longer than the last few $50 dollar 6-10gb games have.

I can probably LAN it up with TF2 with my locals.
  • edited August 2011
How about a bit of a review of what I've been playing since it's not the sort of fare others here might be playing.

So in efforts to find a gaming experience to replace playing Diablo over a LAN with my friends I have resorted to playing MMO games. Being a cheapskate and having cheapskate friends most of these have been of the free-to-play variety. One such game was Vindictus which I had mentioned. This is an interesting game. I'd call it an action RPG with the usual swords and some spells and such. You got a town filled with people and you create or join parties to go off and run missions. There is an action focus in the combat. You almost play it like a 3D fighter game. Fighting bosses inevitably involves learning their moves and how to dodge/block and when and where you can get openings to attack. There is no building up enough defense and attack power and such to just run up and smash them. You'd have to increase your level a LOT before you can do that because the stat increases are very slow and mostly come from equipment. Even then they still might knock you on your ass a lot. So yeah. Curiously high on action for an rpg game. I kind of like it for that, though I do miss having stronger RPG elements at times.

Yet on the other hand the game tries to sell cash shop items to people to make money. Many superficial character modifications such as sexy undergarments are among those things. They make people WANT to buy sexy underwear and you will see them. A lot. If you have a female character they have a "chest size" slider. Yes, you can change breast size. And they bounce. Like jello. Unless you are wearing a big heavy armor of course.

Regardless, you can assume most people playing the game are teenage boys. Their computers will often fall below the minimum system requirements so they will cause a party to lag badly if they host a party. The servers themselves are plagued with some bugs making simple things like logging in difficult.

So Vindictus is a bit of a mixed bag. The actual gameplay is actually fairly interesting, and if you're a younger guy I guess the youngish looking female characters in underwear is...something? Watch out for the male characters though. One character option is a big guy with proportions very similar to the Hulk. Seeing that in a speedo...yeah that can happen too sometimes. If you don't care for that, they have channels and you can change to a less populated one and not see much if any of that. You'll have to put up with some server woes. Running alone can help, but the game will be nearly impossible to play alone at times.

Currently I've taken a break from that and swapped it out for an open beta of Dragons Nest which has some similarities in how it works, but the RPG part factors in more strongly and the art is a lot different. The interface is more WoW influenced too. I may post more about this one more later when it's out of the beta stage.

Well, I'm gonna try Forsaken World at some point. It looks alright. For a free to play MMO, anyway. Hopefully the zones aren't so outrageously confusing to navigate as some other games. Been looking for a MMO forever. I can only overplay Borderlands, TF2, Minecraft, and Terraria so much before I need a break.

I'd wonder why I keep finding myself playing Realm of the Mad God so much but it's hard to argue with the simplicity of it.

Sweet find, X. I'm digging it.

Right now I keep switching between Darksiders, LIMBO, and Deus Ex Human Revolution. I'm almost done with the first two though. Which is good, because Deus Ex looks like it's going to take a while.

I finally started playing Metal Gear Solid 4. It's pretty awesome so far.
